Wayne Bennett in shock talks to end 17-year Origin hiatus — and it all hinges on the Broncos gig: https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nr...n/news-story/9bb380d034e0e04b842e8bc36e6a8818

And once again he's been linked to another job. Good to hear him distance himself from this one but based on past form, we can't exactly take his word for it. I feel that there may be some substance to this rumour so it'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

Souths and Parra in an $8m battle for supremacy
DEAN RITCHIE

PARRAMATTA and South Sydney will contest the NRL’s game-of-theyear on Thursday night before engaging in an $8 million fight for Sydney supremacy off the field.

While the Eels and Rabbitohs meet in a Bankwest Stadium blockbuster, both clubs are also locked in membership melee pitting Sydney’s east against west.

Parramatta and Souths have vowed to become the first club this year to smash through the 30,000 membership barrier — and both won’t accept running second.

“We are looking to break the 30,000-member barrier next week and know Parramatta is trying to knock us off the perch of being the number one membership club in Sydney,” said Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly. Each club stands to pocket around $4m for attracting 30,000 members, both clubs clearly ahead of all Sydney rivals in the chase for membership numbers. It’s the Blue and Gold army against The Pride of the League. On field, Souths have won four successive games while Parramatta has claimed victory in four of its past five matches. But a ferocious battle looms off field with Souths currently sitting at 29,839 members for this season, including 3000 new members. It will be the first time Souths has hit 30,000 since 2016. Parramatta’s membership tally is 28,715.

“We are always really confident in the loyalty of our members, their passion for the club and their desire for us to always stay number one,” Solly said. “It’s going to be a great battle on the field at Bankwest Stadium and it will also be a great battle off the field to show whose members are the proudest.

“We have always believed our members are the most loyal and passionate in the game. Their support in what has been an extraordinarily difficult period has been amazing.

“We have had a remarkable response in a shortened season with potential for games not to be played, and no crowds yet people have kept coming and buying their memberships in numbers.” Pulling a combined total of 58,554 members is a stunning effort given the damage COVID-19 has had on the overall competition and number of games. “We certainly want to be the number one club in the NRL and it’s great for rugby league that Souths and ourselves have such a member-centric culture,” said Parramatta chief executive Jim Sarantinos.

“Our blue and gold army have been fantastic throughout 2020. We have broken our membership record each year for the past seven and we want this growth to expand even further.

“The loyalty and passion of our fan base through the COVID period was tremendous.

“We saw our overall numbers expand and thousands of our members pledge to ensure we came through this time stronger than ever.”

From the Daily Telegraph,

Joseph Suaalii could end Alex Johnston’s South Sydney career

South Sydney fans petitioned to re-sign one of the club’s favourite sons earlier this season but the star’s future will be decided by 17-year-old teen sensation, Joseph Suaalii.

Any hope of Alex Johnston staying at South Sydney next year could come down to whether boom teenager Joseph Suaalii decides to join the Rabbitohs, or chase a future in rugby union.

But there is next to no hope Melbourne flyer Josh Addo-Carr will be at Souths next season, despite a pitch from Latrell Mitchell to try and convince Wayne Bennett to sign ‘The Fox’.

News Corp understands Suaalii is expected to make a call on his career next week.

But even after weeks of silence, there is still no clear indication which way Suaalii will go.

While Souths remain optimistic, there is absolutely no guarantee they will win the race for most wanted teenager in Australian sport.

And the longer it has dragged on has only created more angst.

It is said to be about a 55-45 per cent split in Souths favour which way this will go.

Souths have made a point of limiting any contact with Suaalii and his family to give them the space not to feel pressured after all the hype it created recently.

But the silver lining if they miss out could be that it would re-open the door for Johnston to stay.

While the Rabbitohs are keen to keep Johnston, they simply don’t have the room in their salary cap to make the beloved local junior a decent offer.

But that could change if Suaalii goes to union.

Johnston has certainly attracted interest elsewhere given his recent run of form.

But unless a decision is made on Suaalii soon it could be too late for Souths to keep the flyer regardless.

Meanwhile, Souths just don’t have the salary cap space to entertain the thought of signing Addo-Carr, who would be looking for north of $500,000.

Mitchell created a bit of stir in the last few days when he came out and urged his good friend ‘The Fox’ to join him at Redfern.

Mitchell told NITV that he had even had some conversations with Bennett to try and get him to the club.

It seemed a strange comment given Johnston is being forced out because of salary cap restraints.

No doubt Latrell would want all his mates to play for Souths, it just doesn’t work that way in the real world.

Personally id make him coaching director/ recruitment at souths after next year
That is a really good idea, and with Demetriou taking over, there won't be that jealousy and ego that often stuffs these partnerships up like Gould @ Penrith.

The only thing is that there has been questions marks over his recruiting at other clubs, and also is he knowledgeable enough in the 14-20 years old grades

I wish to god this suaali makes his decision this week, his procrastination is putting our recruitment in jepardy, the reason Aj cant be signed is we are saving cap for him, in the meantime, Aj gets offers maybe above what we would have signed him for, pushing his price up
