Great for Souths' - Seven reasons Bunnies fans should love Origin

By Christian Nicolussi
November 17, 2020 — 3.45pm

Damien Cook is banking on South Sydney's historic mass representation in Wednesday's Origin decider going a long way to making 2021 the Year of the Rabbit.

The same club that didn't field a single player in the Origin series three years ago will have five - Cook, Cody Walker, Dane Gagai, Jaydn Su'A and debutant Corey Allan - on the pitch at Suncorp Stadium.

Queensland forward Jai Arrow is bound for Redfern next year - he officially started on the club's payroll on November 1 - while Wayne Bennett takes his seat in the Maroons coach's box.

Cook was naturally focused on snatching the win north of the border for the Blues, but was already aware of the excitement building for next season, especially with the Origin experience and fact Cameron Murray and Latrell Mitchell could have also featured for the Blues had it not been for injuries. Murray played in game one before a hamstring blow.

According to statistician David Middleton, the last time the club had five players involved in an interstate game was 1971 when Bob McCarthy, John O'Neill, Paul Sait, Ray Branighan and Bob Grant played for NSW.

"It's exciting for next year,'' Cook told the Herald. "When you sit back and look at the number of players involved, it's awesome.

"It's great for the Souths club. I just hope we can all learn from these experiences and these games and take it back to our club and take us to another level so we can chase that next premiership.

"We actually have a Souths WhatsApp group, which is about the 2021 season. But I might have to leave it to get my mind away from footy. The pre-season programs are popping up already and doing my head in.

"We've got a job to do here [with NSW], a win would be a great way to finish off the season, especially having been in the camp the last month.

"I'll then enjoy some time with my family and slowly work my way back into the pre-season.''

The on-field chemistry of Cook and Walker was impossible to miss last week in Sydney, and the pair will pose a huge threat to the home side.

Cook could not be happier for Allan, who is expected to start at fullback.

"Corey is a natural footballer ... he looks like a kid having fun in the backyard," he said. "That's what I love about him. He's one of my favourite players. If he does play at fullback, he's great under the high ball, and if he's on the wing he's great defensively and can save tries.

Well I’m disappointed in that. I thought the Blues pack weren’t up for it apart from Crichton. Haas and Frizell very underwhelming.

QLD just seem to get origin.

Munster and Grant won it for them.

I was so worried when Cody went down but thankfully after full time he was up and walking and seemed to be ok.

I thought Jake Trbojevic gave it a red hot go in defence and didn't miss a beat.

Qld's pack were all over NSW. Didn't give Cleary and Walker a lot to work with.

Munster was scary everytime he touched the pill.

Good news that Cody was on his feet at FT. Must've been bad if they didn't show a replay of it.

Yep Jake Turbo does all those little things people don’t notice as well just like Cam Murray does.

The problem is why is he like first or second receiver when its not Cleary? The keep running that play, he aint a ball player other than popping the occasional offload.

This loss is on Fittler, he doesnt know how to pick a proper team, no specialist centres, guys playing out of position, he doesnt know how to run plays for his main strike alternatives, Cleary was commanding the ball on both sides of the ruck, Cody couldnt get to do his thing because he was having to constantly switch sides because of Cleary, and Cleary made some dubious decisions (kicking on tackle 3, 5 metres out from QLD line after a repeat set? WTF?)

But Cody will get the blame, it started straight after the game with Kent on FOX saying "he's played his last game" and Cronk chipping in about how "Souths have been to 3 prelim finals and the halves havent stepped up in big games." Huh? Like Cleary has? How did Keary go in game 1? Thats the game we should have won. We havent won a decider at Suncorp for 15 years. We were 2-11 or 2-13 up there before last night. Their fowards killed our fowards.

You’re dead right but Nrl fans like using Souths or Souths players as a scapegoats. We should have won that game. Cleary has a few good moments like that 40/20... but that’s where it should have changed for us and we should have consolidated and scored but we didn’t

The point of attack is ALL through Cleary. The guy wants all the ball, wants all the kicks in general play, wants to do it all. He didn't want to take a step back, let Cody run the attack for a bit, stay on the right side and allow Cody to play left side so he could work with Wighton. Wighton hardly touched the ball because Cleary kept turning the ball in for Jake T and the fowards didn't go forward.

Fittler put Cody in the side so he could do what he did with Souths, but Fittler didn't put structures and plays in place for the team to play through Cody

We won the previous series because Maloney was there to take the ball out of Cleary's hands.

Well what a game that was last night huh?! That was Origin Footy at it's absolute best! Loved every minute of it! It was so great to finally have a packed crowd, it was so surreal and we cranked the TV up at home so we could really take in a huge crowd for the first time this year. A great game too, brilliant Origin Footy with both sides going as hard as they possibly could. Queensland obviously dominated the game and were the better side but NSW still could have snatched it.

I'm obviously a kiwi but I go for Queensland in Origin so I'm obviously stoked with the seies win. A famous win that no one saw coming. I think this will go down as one of the greatest ever series victories by any state. I'm just glad the 'worst ever Queensland team' won it, still can't believe they did to be honest. Put it down to Wayne, a coaching masterclass of the highest order. What a coach!

In regards to our Rabbitohs, I thought Corey had a mixed debut but he certainly wasn't bad. Pulled off some great plays and could have been the hero if Holmes had caught that last try he bombed. Gags was his usual Origin self and he had a big game. Jaydn had reduced minutes so couldn't make a huge impact and Jai played well too. For our NSW Rabbitohs, it was a bit of a tougher night. Their forwards were getting dominated so neither of them, despite coming up with a few good plays, really had a chance to inject themselves on a game.

Still, what a night it was!! A fantastic way to end a tough Season for everyone.
