Senior Wests Tigers players told coach Michael Maguire about the need to lighten the mood and enjoy each other's company more after the weekend's heavy defeat, starting with a few extra cartons of beer on the bus back from Newcastle.

Maguire was composed after the 44-4 drubbing against the Knights on Saturday and refused to launch into one of his dressing-room tirades. He instead asked the players what they thought was needed to turn the club's fortunes around.

At least one senior player made it known COVID-19 had made it difficult for the players to socialise, and training had become a grind.

Others said they were determined to keep training as hard as ever, but wanted to better use the limited time they had together away from the field.

Knowing it was Chris Lawrence's 250th NRL game and Benji Marshall's 250th in the club's colours, some of the players asked Maguire to stock up on a few extra cartons of beer to make the long trip home more enjoyable.

Smiles were on faces again on Tuesday as Maguire kept it light-hearted with a series of games.

The usual noise about Maguire being too hard on the players has resurfaced on the back of a couple of disappointing defeats to the Knights and the Warriors.

Andrew Gray, the club's high-performance manager, has spotted no red flags with the players when it comes to workloads.

Maguire has certainly not lost the dressing room, and was said to have taken on board a lot of the feedback that spilled out from his players underneath McDonald Jones Stadium.

Prop Russell Packer said Maguire opening the floor to the players was not a sign of a coach under pressure.

"Madge has definitely not run out of answers, he's an experienced coach who has won premierships here and in England,'' Packer said.

"We're in a tough hole at the moment. The boys need to fight our way out of it. We have a must-win game this weekend against Canterbury. All our energy needs to be on this game.''

Packer said COVID-19 had taken its toll on everyone and ''the status quo changed in terms of social interaction''.

Adam Doueihi was overcome with emotion at half-time, and again at full-time, against the Knights. Packer was one of the first to console him.

"Obviously with all the stuff that happened over in Lebanon, he's proud of his heritage and he was pretty emotional during the week,'' Packer said.

"I guess it all came out with him at the end of the game. I noticed him alone, he got emotional, I didn't say anything to him, I just let him know I was there.

"This game brings out a lot of emotion in people, and it can be compounded with unfortunate events and really sad situations happening around the world.''

Maguire has rushed Jacob Liddle back into the No. 9 jersey. Maguire told the Herald just last week the hooker, who overcame a ruptured ACL, ''had been extraordinary with the way he'd gone about his rehab''. Josh Reynolds is likely to replace Liddle when he needs an inevitable spell against the Bulldogs.

The poor didums haven’t been able to socialise? Damn I feel so sorry for them. That must be hard. Maybe after they get flogged again this week we can organise some coke and whores to go along with the extra cartons. That should ensure smiling faces at training next week.

Simple question. You love your buzz words so throw some examples at us to back them up. From what I see the joint hasn’t progressed much in years. On field results confirm that.

Have never disagreed with anyone about the footy team not being shit.
I think the coaches we have hired, have a lot to answer for.
But the club (apart from the footy team) is getting everything in place to be a strong club, if you can't see that or don't want to see that then fine.

Here comes another chance for the bastards to get our hopes up! scratch out a win against the wooden spooners, come up against the roosters who can barely field a team, get a victory or two against Manly or Souths who aren't very good and then set up a must win against Parra in the last round to get in the 8.



Which we end up losing by 50 points

dont believe the roosters violins in the media

next week they get JWH, Crichton, tupou and BMoz back with Cordner and SBW a chance

on paper their team will shit on ours

also keep in mind for the past 10 weeks straight we have lost a player to injury/suspension every single week, often multiple players, yet no one on the media gives a shit when it’s us. So expect a few of our guys to go down on Sunday.

In terms of which club has used the most players this season it’s Wests Tigers with a total of 31.

They have six currently in the casualty ward and three of their stars have missed more than half the season. But that large number of players used can also be attributed in part to coach Michael Maguire’s chopping and changing of the line-up.

Wests Tigers were a merged entity with joint control by the boards of Wests and Balmain. One hundred shares were issued to Balmain Tigers Rugby League Football Club and 100 shares were issued to Western Suburbs Rugby League Football Group Pty Limited as a 50/50-owned joint venture.

On 17 September 2014, after finace problems arose at Balman, a new shareholder agreement was put into place with the supervision of the NRL. The board was reduced to seven with two from Balmain Tigers, two from Wests Leagues and three independents. On 25 September 2014, with Balmain Tigers moving into Funding Default to the Wests Tigers, the board nominees from Balmain were withdrawn and with the backing and support of the NRL a new reduced five-person board of directors was appointed, with independent Marina Go announced as the new chairman of the board.

In 2016 it was announced that Wests Ashfield would take a 75% interest in the club. The new board had five members appointed from Wests Ashfield, two from Balmain along with two independents. In 2018, Balmain Leagues went into Voluntary administration, and in 2019 it was announced that Balmain Leagues and Wests Ashfield would merge.,

I reckon some people's expectations or outlook are wrong. I understand that everyone wants success and we've lurched from one problem to another.

The problem is that people think they know who is too blame and that everything is wrong. One of those problems is catastrophising the situation. I mean this is a game that we watch on the weekend. It's not that big a deal. It's also not that bad. We come 9th all the time which means we are close to making the finals and close to being a competitive team.

The next problem is when people continually blame x or y for our problems. It's not that simple. Sometimes shit just doesn't work out.

I think our retention and recruitment has been poor but you are never going to get that 100% correct. I'm more worried about us stuffing that up and we need to be really careful with banking on any one player or whatever to turn us around. It's going to take smart management of retention and recruitment going forward.

Personally I see getting someone like LL as the perfect example of how this club can improve. We just need more of those signings and retaining the right players.

Cleary really f**ked up but I have no problems with those signings if the length of the deals were significantly less.
