NRL clubs rarely take penalty goals from 40m out. I doubt they'll be hammering the sticks with FG attempts unless theyre at the point of no return.

Then you'll have markers standing a metre offside, blockers and offside defenders borking the kicker, which they wont penalise.

The NRL should move to the Cave

6 again for 10m infringements should only be when defending inside your own half.

players will happily just be offside every tackle trying to pin a team down given a restart on the 1st or 2nd tackle is hardly much of a deterrent

the 2 point field goal will be attempted about as often as the 20/40

Im generally against the constant rule changes that RL has each year.

Don't mind most of these presented. And naturally fans will howl them down as they do most times.

However while I like the 6 again rule in general play for ruck issues - the issue I see is by not blowing the whistle for a penalty, the attacking team doesn't get the option to kick for goal. Now that offside counts here too.. I really see a flaw.

If a side is attacking & down by two points near the end of a game, the defence can stand offside or ruin the ruck without giving away a penalty goal kick. The attacking team MUST score a try to win. Yes they may give away a professional foul / binning.. but if there's only seconds on the clock left...

The 6 again in this situation is blatantly open to exploitation by the defence to spoil the attack to close out a game.

So..

Your side is down by two points, has the ball inside the opposition half with 30 seconds to go... Your opponent is lying all over the ball carrier in the tackles to waste time, standing offside to blunt the attack, you're getting effectively useless "6 again" calls... all the while the clock is winding down to fulltime and no penalty is blown... you lose by 2..

How you gonna feel then..

Or what happens similarly near the end of the game if you're down by 1.. going for a field goal, the defence is blatantly offside and charges down the attempt... only for you to get a "6 again" rule .. which you can only use IF you recover the ball.... and with bugger all time left in the game to do anything with it.

Rules like this have flaws. And the refs' will cop the brunt by ruling to these..

Exactly what Queensland did in game 1 and 3 this year. Only teams have been given an even bigger exploit now. I agree the offside six again and the 2 point field goal are shockers but I like most of the rest of the changes.

On the bright side the defense might get a player sin binned with 5 seconds to go. Very useful!

What they should have done is make the game continue past full time until a full set is completed if six agains are conceded. You keep giving away six again and the game continues until you stop OR the attacking team has the option to take the two. Why are we rewarding cheating and cynical play in these situations. Coaches are going to exploit the crap out of this late in games with a small lead.

On first read I thought why are we doing this and most of them were crap.

On reflection most are pretty inconsequential except the 2 point field which as everyone has said, WHY and the six again from the offside which will only be exploited by teams within the first two or three weeks.

The one genuinely positive change is if you stop play you go off the field and get treated for a bit, will stop the play acting and if players are actually injured then they probably need the 2 minute spell that their teammates will have to cover.

the 2 point field goal is the only wtf change but like others have said, it will rarely be used.
Can only see someone like Cleary using it when he's shit out of ideas and his usual bomb and hope isn't working.

I love the 2 point field goals. With Cleary on the field Panthers would gain more than most by that rule.

But on a serious note it could make tiggt games interesting. If a team slots a 1 point field goal to take a lead. Do you go for 1 to level it or 2 to take the lead?

What constitutes a ‘genuine attempt to play the ball with their foot’? So often you see players almost miming a play the ball. Expect this one to be penalised a lot in the opening couple of weeks, people will complain and then it won’t be enforced anymore.
Why rule on a subjective thing like a genuine attempt? Black and white, did he play the ball with his foot or not?
