It’s a technical one. He had advanced in front of the spot where the ball was played before Reynolds kicked, so is therefore out of play.

He can be in front of the kicker and then wait for the ball to be advanced by the catching team, but only if he doesn’t pass the point where the ball is player before the kick goes up.

It’s nothing to do with where he was when the ball was played
