I really,really hope that's the case Botany.
Brother, we've discussed this before. As much as it hurts to have a local boy, record breaker and future Rabbitohs legend let go, as most footy analysts (Brandy, Anasta, Daley, Ennis, Cronk etc etc) watching Souths have said and agreed, that if one had to make the choice of keeping only one player, Cody was the one. He is the most integral and responsible for Souths offensive play, and, because he started first grade so much later in his career, is much less banged up, AND, for his style of play, age is not such a critical issue.

Just hope this theory holds up......

Mate, I don't take it lightly either. However if you are unhappy with moves the club are making, the only way to make them sit up and take notice is to impact the bottom line. You could ring and register your disappointment but that isn't going to do anything. However if you're a long time member like me and you tell them you're no longer renewing and tell them why, that may affect future decisions they make.
Yeah I can't really dispute any of your logic.

But it IS a big step. Just hope we don't have to contemplate it.....

From Zero Tackle,

Professional ties link Bennett with Firehawks bid

Following the news that former Brisbane Broncos chief executive Shane Edwards has joined the board of the Brisbane Firehawks NRL bid, the murmurs surrounding Wayne Bennett's potential inclusion are only set to intensify.

Late last week, the 71-year-old mastercoach suggested that due to his time at Redfern likely to be ending at the close of the 2021 season, he had pondered the thought about entering the hot seat of the league's 17th franchise.

The ARLC are reported to be meeting with members of all three sunshine state hopefuls next week to determine whether Redcliffe, the Jets or the Firehawks would enter the league as the latest team.

On Tuesday, Edwards - a member of the successful Broncos back office of the nineties and early 2000s - spoke to The Courier Mail about the potential of once again working with Bennett should the $25 million Firehawks bid be given the green light.

“Wayne would stimulate interest as Firehawks coach so I would love to see him considered for the role here,” Edwards said.

“Wayne’s coaching record speaks for itself and it is still speaking for itself.

“If he was to be available, he would be incredible, one from a point of view of attracting players, because I believe he develops players better than anyone in the league.

“Wayne understands NRL players are young men with issues and he mentors them and brings them out the other side."

Having already heaped sufficient praise on the seven time premiership coach, Edwards continued by likening the former policeman with a global giant of the artform.

“I always used to talk about Sir Alex Ferguson with Wayne. Ferguson was 71 or 72 and winning titles so from that point of view, if Wayne had a young up and coming coach with him, that would be sensational," he continued.

“I would love to be part of the first derby with the Firehawks with Wayne Bennett as coach taking on the mighty Broncos.

“That [a Brisbane NRL derby] is what the league needs to create growth.”

Despite not holding a contract with the Rabbitohs next season, Bennett holds the whip hand in negotiations with whomever is chosen to enter the competition next.

With a record that "speaks for itself", Bennett could feasibly ask for a blank check to perform the same role that he has in Rugby League circles for the past 45-seasons.

Irrespective of reports that the often straight batted Bennett has spoken to both the Jets and Firehawks in an informal sense this season, he was quick to claim this week that his usually steadfast mind was far from made up.

“I’m happy to be the great fence-sitter at the moment. I’m open to all offers,” Bennett said.

“Until there is a definite team coming in, I won’t commit to anything.

“There’s a few opportunities for me to do stuff next season but I won’t make a final decision until I finish at South Sydney and then I’ll see what’s on the table for me."

Although adding ambiguity to the fascinating situation, the Allora-born former back alleviated doubt as to where he would be calling home in a geographic sense next season.

“There is no rush for me. The one certainty is I’m coming back to Brisbane," Bennett continued.

“I don’t know if I will stay with Souths. I don’t know what I want to do. Right now, I’m focused on finishing the season with South Sydney.

“I have an important job right here, right now. I want to give my all for Souths and then I will worry about my next move.”

Bennett's third-placed Bunnies face a pre-finals dress rehearsal on Friday night when the face the second-placed Panthers in a contest that will go a long way to determining the final read of the table.

‘Wrong and painful’ - Benji Marshall’s wife Zoe posts honest revelations: https://www.news.com.au/sport/nrl/w...s/news-story/275095a53c8b2fb9832142957490a68a

From Zero Tackle,

Is this Bunnies half the Dally M dark horse?

Most 26-year-old debutants would be content with simply playing in the NRL. Making the grade, pulling on that jersey and, even if just once, they get to be a first-grade rugby league player. Not Cody Walker though.

Since debuting at the start of 2016, Walker hasn't just played in the NRL, he's starred in it. Whether it be playing State of Origin or captaining the Indigenous All Stars, the off-the-cuff half has left a sizeable footprint in his 137-game career.

The job isn't finished yet though.

There's little doubt that Nathan Cleary and Tom Trbojevic are the two best players in our competition. Freaks. Their clubs both occupy spots in the top five, and the duo are arguably the biggest reason both sides sit at the top. Unfortunately, the injury curse hasn't been kind to either Blues stars.

Tom Trbojevic is likely to miss the remainder of the 2021 regular season after scans found a minor fracture in his cheekbone, potentially limiting the superstar to only play a grand total of 13 games this season before the finals.

There's little doubting his dominance across those matches, scoring 19 tries, 20 linebreaks and 25 try-assists, he's been phenomenal. But after missing the opening five games of the year as well as failing to back up from any Origin games, he may have missed his shot.

You could argue the same for Cleary. The halfback has also notched 13 matches this year, a shoulder injury suffered in Origin II ruling him out until the Dragons game last Friday. Cleary has the wood over Turbo when it comes to games played, the Penrith star set to play the final three games of the regular season. Having notched 15 try-assists to match his eight tries and 16 forced line dropouts, Nathan was the early season favourite for the gong, but there's a new man on the scene.

Cody Walker hasn't been in many conversations for the award. Neither was Jack Wighton last year. However, with the stats Walker has thrown up so far in 2021, it may change the narrative. Fox Sports reported on Saturday that Walker became the first man in rugby league history to register 50 line-break assists in a season. While NRL.com have his official count at 40, it's a ridiculous feat, as is his try-assist tally.

Parramatta rookie Tim Smith still holds the rugby league record for most try-assists in a season, delivering 40 in his maiden season all the way back in 2005. With three games to go and 34 assists, Walker is edging closer and closer to making history of his own.

Fitness will play a massive role in the award as well as form, giving Walker a huge advantage having played 20 of the Rabbitohs' 21 games this year, in a side that's only lost three games all year.
He is so vital to the Bunnies' attack, running the show down the most edge in the game. The imminent return of Alex Johnston and Dane Gagai will boost their left flank further, and the introduction of Benji Marshall begs the question - how much influence has the former Tigers half had on Walker? Was it Wayne that brought this out of him?

The most frustrating aspect for rival clubs is how much of a natural footy player Walker is. It's hard to mark or do video sessions on someone who relies so much on instinct. He's become the best eyes-up footy player across our game, and looks a great chance at becoming the Rabbitohs first Dally M medallist since 1980.

Set to face Penrith, the Roosters and St. George Illawarra before the finals, Cody Walker will be in his prime as he charges towards the game's biggest accolade. The Panthers face two top four sides in their last three games, and with question marks lingering over Cleary's shoulder, the odds for Walker to claim the medal will be firming each week.

Typically held the Monday before the Grand Final, it's likely we'll have our answer on September 27, when the award ceremony will take place. The question of the night will be 'Cleary or Turbo?', but don't be surprised if 31-year-old Walker's name is called on rugby league's most prestigious night.

yeah go on, do that, I’m sure the people around the club could do with a good laugh
im betting they’d put him on speaker phone & roll around on the floor killing themselves laughing at some boofhead getting all jumpy about silly rumours & things that haven’t happened & are unlikely to
Just let the club work it out, nobody knows more about what’s going on, who’s who in the zoo & all the little intricacies that make up a squad

The way things are going he will join bennet at the new team
Whoever dosent believe bennet isnt feathering his own nest is a fool, he advised both reynolds and sua and maybe even gagai to leave for other pastures, the club didnt help either, he hasnt left 1 club he didnt have a hand in decimating, we tried to limit the damage but as all can see it hasnt worked the best. Cody saying he wants to wait until we make the grand final is a ploy, he will get offeres and use them to hike his price, which is good strategy for him, but not for the club hopeing to get a little better than market price and save some cap

Hopefully a factor in Cody re-signing is continuing to play with latrell and building that combo.
Agree with you.
The point you make is very true. The converse is also true IMO.
If we don't sign Cody, and treat him like Adam, Latrell might say "stuff this" and walk. It's not like Latrell has signed on long term with us, it's only 2 years.

You do know Bennett had nothing to do with Reyno leaving? Reyno left because the club wouldn't offer more than 1 year, but if you want to cling to your sad little conspiracy theory go right ahead. Also, what proof do you have he advised Gagai to leave? You don't have any? Well colour me surprised.
