The NRL is set for a trade window as early as 2022 — and it could fix the market’s ugliest problem: https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nr...s/news-story/622ee8285e0bcc8b224f5bc9b157a5ae

From Zero Tackle,

Growing calls for NRL to introduce a draft

The discussion surrounding the introduction of an NRL trade window once again surfaced in the past week, with league boss Andrew Abdo flagging a reformed transfer market is a “top priority” for the league’s future.

“Our system needs to be updated and there are frustrations for everyone,” Abdo told The Daily Telegraph over the weekend.

“We think this is a genuine opportunity to make our game even more appealing to fans and if we’re running a sports entertainment business here, then positive change is good for all of us.’’

Both fans and critics of the league have suggested the NRL could move a step closer to the AFL’s trade model to improve player movements and end mid-season signings.

While the concept of a trade period remains fresh in the minds of many who have questioned the NRL’s current player market system, reporter Andrew Webster has suggested the league should look to introduce a draft to enhance player recruitment, further mirroring the AFL.

“I think the NRL needs to look at a draft,” Webster said on SEN 1170.

“The transfer of players between clubs during the season isn’t working.

“The game would benefit as the AFL does with all the stories and media interest in the off-season.

“Instead of focusing on off-field scandals they can focus on the draft.

“I think it works beautifully in other sports, it’s an event. Look at how much coverage it generates in the NBA and NFL in particular.

“I think it’s something the game has to look at as well.”

Journalist Paul Kent called for the NRL to look into formulating a draft system midway through last year during a tough financial period for St George Illawarra.

“It is also the false economy in the salary cap, that’s what people don’t understand,” Kent said on NRL 360.

“There is a false economy there. If you are a $400,000 a year player and that’s your true value, but the Roosters come and say play for us and we will give you $350,000.

“Then you say I’m going to be $50,000 short but I’m going to make the grand final. I’m a chance to play finals and semi-finals every year and build my value for my next contract.

“If the Dragons or the Titans give you $400,000 you say I’m not going there. So they have to pay $450,000.”

The NRL announced this week that the 30-man squad deadline has been moved to August 1, meaning clubs could sign rival players on the eve of finals to increase their premiership bid.

I hate the idea of a draft. It's a myth. All it does is put promising players in shit systems.

There is no evidence of a draft equalising a competition, if anything the evidence points towards the current NRL model.

The game needs to expand before a draft is necessary.

If there was anything i would to change for rookies, it would be to cap how much their first pro contract can be but that won't happen because rugby would just swoop in.

I agree. Not sure a draft is the way to go either but I guess no one really knows in terms of a draft in the NRL until we give it a go.

Revealed: The new offer Rabbitohs will make Reynolds as he concedes ‘time will tell’

become clearer this week when the Rabbitohs captain sits down for the latest round of negotiations with the Redfern club.
The Reynolds camp have so far baulked at South Sydney’s 12-month contract extension for 2022 – leaving the Bunnies in a stalemate with their skipper as the club prepares to start the new season as one of the NRL premiership heavyweights.

The Reynolds camp is entitled to play hardball given the champion No.7 is one of the most experienced halfbacks in the competition, played all 23 games last season and kicked goals at 85 per cent.

Fox Sports has been told the Rabbitohs are expected to make Reynolds a two-year offer with an option for a third season in the club’s favour.

The dollars haven’t even been discussed yet – which is where the negotiations will get pointed.

“I’m meeting with the club this week and we’ll know more from there,” Reynolds told Fox Sports at the NRL launch.

Asked could he see himself wearing the jumper of a rival NRL club, Reynolds said: “At the moment no, but time will tell”.

The Fox Sports Lab numbers highlight how Reynolds still clearly ranks among the most experienced and valued halfbacks in the NRL.

Last season, the South Sydney captain scored six tries, had 11 try-assists, 13 secondary assists and forced 20 line drops courtesy of his kicking game.

Over the course of the past four seasons, Reynolds has only missed eight NRL matches out of a possible 101; two in 2019, two in 2018 and three in 2017.

Then there’s his goal-kicking. If you had to have a player kicking for your life, you’d want Reynolds.

Last year he kicked at 85 per cent. In 206 NRL matches across a nine year career, he’s kicked at 83 per cent.

South Sydney claim the reason the club only wants to do a 12-month extension is because they got burned by the early retirements of champion players Sam Burgess and Greg Inglis.

The concept received support on the Fox League Showcase launch program on Monday when Cooper Cronk said he could understand the Rabbitohs position.

Reynolds, 30, disagrees and is expected to push for a two to three-year extension.

As for SuperCoach Wayne Bennett, he’s also due to finish up as head coach with South Sydney at the end of this season.

The Bunnies intend to try and convince Bennett to remain involved in the club in a mentoring style of capacity.

Reynolds agrees and wants to see the seven-time premiership-winner remain at Redfern.

“I’d love to. I don’t know what I’m doing yet,” Reynolds said.

“It’d be nice. He’s a great coach and he’s great for the game.

“It’d be sad to see him not coaching.

“I think he’ll still be involved in one way or another.

“He’s an important figure at the club. It’d be pretty silly to get rid of Wayne and lose his knowledge of the game.

“Obviously Jason Demetriou’s a great coach and got a lot of experience working under Wayne but it’d be still good to have the big fella there and bounce ideas off from time to time.”

After qualifying for three straight preliminary finals, plenty of experts are saying it’s this year or bust for the Bunnies.

Again, Reynolds disagrees about the premiership window closing.

“I wouldn’t say so. Our depth is greater than it has been the last couple of years,” Reynolds said.

“You need a lot of luck to win premierships and we haven’t had that luck with injuries and what not the last couple of years.”

But is there any scar tissue from finishing 80 minutes short of the grand final the last three seasons?

“Yes and no. For the players that were there it hurts,” the Souths no.7 said.

“But we’ve got a number of new players there now that have come in and are doing a great job keeping things fresh at training.

“It’s a new squad now. We look at the past and use it as a bit of hurt but obviously you’ve got to move forward too.”

South Sydney will launch the new season into orbit on March 11 when they meet premiers Melbourne at AAMI Park on March 11.

Revealed - The new offer Rabbitohs will make Reynolds as he concedes ‘time will tell’: https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nr...m/news-story/7c51b3d6707b8032508406c2f43ebf89

This is what I've been waiting to hear! It's what I've been wanting to hear! Finally some potential progress next week. This is a good sign that the club has obviously thought about it and they agree with the sentiment of the fans, that we can't lose Reyno yet. Now, that's not to say he'll except this offer but I think a two year deal with a club option for a third year is very fair and works well for both parties. Hopefully Reyno agrees and accepts. Would like to have this out of the way as early as possible so there are no distractions for the club.

Mate I'm with you 100%. I think this situation is amenable to both parties and I'm really hoping Reyno takes up the offer. I know I'm looking forward to celebrating once news comes through that Reyno said Yes!

Surprised about Su'a. I was getting the impression that he wasn't keen to settle for current value and we'd have to wait to see how it plaued out.
