its also interesting that both syd & melb make up about 60% of the ratings in the metro markets for both codes & 45% of the total ratings on FTA
if.. that % extends on into STV ratings for both codes , then the long held view that AFL is a lot more popular in Melb then NRL is in sydney is on slightly shakey ground
with 484K sydneysiders watching last nights NRL game on all platforms , as opposed to 505K watching the AFL in Melb.

Looking at the big difference in metro fta ratings you can see that nrl fans have abandoned Ch9 for kayo.we really need a new fta partner and clubs in the other major metro cities.

I think the penny has finally dropped at Ch9. News of people moving on in various forms is the first shake up in about 25 years.

It's hard to see how the NRL can't engage Ch10 in this next cycle. It's a failure if they don't. It would be great to see 10 take FTA and broadcast Saturdays too, but give up exclusivity of Origin and GF so foxtel can cover them.

If we get to that stage I think we can see national metro coverage on FTA and STV which gives us a great chance to improve broadcast revenue.

It’s embarrassing for ch9. At this point I feel like surely they will either change things up or not go so hard for the NRL rights. At the rate FTA ratings are going it doesn’t seem as worth it for them if they just let it keep sliding.

As for the NRL if they don’t seriously look into other offers they’re crazy. The ratings trend shows that the fans are outright rejecting ch9.

Finally just got round to cancelling my foxtel subscription for $168 a month and gone to Kayo for $15 a month! Fox must be seeing a big drop in revenue. explains the reduction in NRL channel presenters!

The total numbers over all platforms show the NRL is rating strongly. FTA is weak due to Ch9's poor coverage. The fact they haven't worked that out by now, and changed it up, beggars belief.

It really makes you wonder if they want to retain the rights. If they don't the NRL could struggle to get a mega deal. The pity is Ch9 now have a massive media coverage with TV, radio and newspapers. If they used all that properly it would be a massive bonus for the NRL.

still don’t understand why the companies dont report streaming numbers now they have become so significant.

I'd say it's because the network's parent company's are worried about competitors.

Anyone can bid for the streaming rights and scale the hardware for demand.

The same can't be said for over the air broadcasting where only three companies have the ability to distribute.

Its because their coverage is terrible. I skip over time to time out of curiosity and its the same shit format from 20 years ago. Gould is a terribly negative mouthpiece and should have been moved on 10yrs ago. You just come away with a negative feeling from watching it.

good point. Though there isn't anywhere near as much revenue in streaming. Quick back of the cig packet. Costs $125mill to buy the rights. $25mill to produce the content. At $25 pp per month that's 500k people driven to subscribe for the year by NRL to break even. Not taking into account what revenue they generate from advertising.
