ssshhh now thats an inconvenient truth that is spoiling the Vlandys circle jerk crews moment.

That almost $800m revenue made $20m profit, So the costs are higher

As a opposed to $600m making $60m profit.

The middle column is all that matters,
In 10 years the NRL's revenue has gone up by 200%

Compared to doubling.

That is in a time when RL had 2 clubs get bailed out by head office

FTR PVL wasn't involved when this started the ARLC as a whole has done a great job to get the game on track after a wasted 20 years

Or it may be the fact they are buying a $1/2billion asset means their surplus isnt so great?

That near $300mill gap is going to get a whole lot wider over next 5 years unless those Pistol Pete magic tricks start happening. But hey like I said, no shame in a strong second place.

Its a good result, for the NRL. (caveat being we dont yet know what grassroots funding is). Like I said its a good second placing.

Comparison with the AFL directly is pointless. They have 18 men’s teams not 16 (during the period under comparison), much larger playing squads, a highly expensive women’s comp compared with ours(again remembering the period under comparison) and much more substantial travel costs. Their competition has cost a shitload more to run and, in some facets, always will. The ARLC had gone a great job. Kudos to Peter and the Commission.

I don’t mind the comparison

it’s a benchmark for rugby league to surpass which can happen under vlandys

Worth noting that Im full of it here.

While the AFL media rights go from 418 to 476m this year, the NRL starts its new deal this year as well - taking it up to 400m+ pa for tv rights.

AFLW is a full season played as a stand alone comp
NRLW is squeezed in with only 6 teams

The NRL finding a proper home for that comp will increase revenue

Dolphins will increase revenue, As will team 18

Westpac, Kia sponsorships aren't included. Nor is the new TV deal or the GF hosting rights.

Not to mention other assets in the pipeline to be bought.

NRL is coming from virtually nothing when the ARLC was formed afterall. So getting to where it should be if SL didn't ruin the game

Great post, That is why I like the comparison from 2012-2022 as opposed to the 2 codes

Shows how much an 18 team nrl is worth

probably worth more as gws and suns aren’t worth anything

so take off the money they make due to owning marvel and we should get that

So vlandys is doing a good job

how does humble pie feel like ?
Financially last 2 years? yes,
for news ltd? yes
rest of the game less so.
This is juts the start of the real revenue gap pain, unless something drastic happens in next 2 years that revenue gap will be $400mill or more by 2025. If you dont think thats a problem for the game into the future youve got rocks in your head, or your happy with being the second biggest football code in the country? I've just seen what AFL are offering to spend in grassroots in tassie if they get a club, thats the stuff you can do to build your game when your earning that much revenue.

you're in the wrong thread for pistol pete critiquing lol

The financials are positive for second year running coming out of covid (barring grassroots spending). Good to see there's a strategy for asset investment and lets hope the commentary in investing in grassroots comes to fruition.

Vlandys has made some odd calls, but that the league is in a better financial position cannot be denied.

It may not be the best, but it is much better, all things properly considered.
