Lets not forget that they had a team from Toronto Canada in Super League, but the clubs then appointed a Goose called Robert Elstone to look at ways to improve the image of Super League and the Goose thought is was a good idea to replace a team from Toronto Canada with Leigh which is a district of Wigan, and despite being in the job 2 years the only other thing he came up with was signing up for the players to receive Pizzas after the games. The Goose didn't even cover the wages he was on let alone his staff wages.
The Goose Elstone blew the biggest chance the game ever had of getting a toe hold in North America, the biggest sports market in the world for a team in the suburb of Wigan
I just posted this elsewhere

I still can’t believe super league did it

they could’ve had two Canadian teams and maybe New York in super league now

A great article about the current ratings debate.

7 seems stuck on an old model of metro fta.

Nine appear to be looking more broadly at targeted markets. Nine also seems more focussed on streaming.

10 is basically dead.

I saw another article that stated networks are now more focussed on total audience including metro regional and on live/on demand channels. 9 Now is the market Leader here for that and it’s where qu a lot of our grand final audience went.

No doubt the FTA market is declining so sports are going to need to be smart to get the best future deals.

Nine valuing regionals is excellent for rugby league

shame their coverage is so bad but if they pony up the dollars and get all the games it will give me joy that Murdoch finally (really unlikely) got booted from rugby league

nine have been one of the biggest pushers of "total tv" - that is metro, regional and BVOD measurements all being properly included in the ratings. Its a shame they dont feel the same way about STAN data.

Yes it really is in League`s interest to have the strength of its` total viewership being out there for all to see. Should help us attract more and better sponsors.
Does make me wonder whether the big drift to regional areas because of the out-of-control property markets in the large cities means that these markets are being recognised as more valuable now.

Businesses want to sell goods and services. Irrespective of how TV ratings are tabulated, it`s hard to believe that successful advertisers and sponsors were previously ignoring consumers in regional areas.

Still happens today

league fans used to complain about regionals not be included

recently lots of viewers were counted as they had moved to kayo but now the figures are coming out League is a long way ahead

and we still have zero figures from nz

it all makes league look way smaller than it is

But I don't believe regional consumers have ever been ignored by vested interests. It's just convenient for media companies to pretend they are. If NRL negotiators don`t fully appreciate the value of what they're selling, the buyers can afford to offer less.

The significance of obfuscating regional viewing figures is psychological. Similar to the enduring influence of a front page headline where the accompanying details tell a somewhat different story.

There's stats on media spend, and the regional spend is tiny, much much smaller than the population % split. Why? Only TV would know.
Of course this is only relevant to FTA and radio. Streaming and online has no differentiation. But I suspect they may look at where audiences are and may still value metro over regional, possibly because of product reach?

'ABS Regional Population Data suggests that despite 36% of the country living outside metro markets, ONLY 10% of national media budgets are spent regionally.'

Perth Red currently on suicide watch.
It’s interesting the sad man from Perth derided the value of regional ratings despite the fact a major network has said the opposite. He seems to enjoy playing a double game. We clearly outrated our major opponents last year so he’s complains about the value of the tv rights. This is despite the fact it’s pretty clear the amount of content we provide at this time is less than our opponents, including womens football and our game is played over a shorter time span disallowing the level of advertising our opponent can leverage. His agenda is absolutely clear. He’s a misery guts who finds a negative in every positive for the game. With the season approaching prepare for 7 months of endless complaining about crowds. Complaints about small venues. Complaints about modern venues with smaller crowds. Complaints about regional venues. Complaints about grassy hills. It’s a relentless never ending agenda of negativity.

You will also notice he constantly attacks legitimate revenue drivers for clubs particularly in Sydney. He manages to turn every advantage our game has into a negative.
