You don’t shoot on a playmaker just to missile into him. You shoot on him to reduce the time that he has to make decisions. If he runs you have to hit him. So you have to commit.

No the alternative is to actually make a genuine tackle, not just pongo the bloke into a coma. No one is saying just let him run, but blokes need to change their behaviour when pressuring a half and not just bowl into them like an American tourist in SE Asia.

Why though? Why is the onus on the defensive team if the halfback wants to play flat?

Same reason it's on the defensive team not to take his head off or spear him to death?

Again, no problem with tackling him. But if we're putting the onus on defenders not to knock dudes out or break their necks why is there an issue with extending that protection to players who dig into the line?

It's legitimately not difficult to pressure a half without putting your shoulder into his back at full tilt after he's passed the footy.
