Just seeing game now. Send off justified imho. Not that it means a tinker’s cuss.

Couple of these on Cleary or Kikau or Luai would certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons though.

I think it's pretty hard to argue against the send off, even Des struggled to argue that it could have gone either way (sin bin or send off). Just a shame that it happened so early and killed the contest, but that's on Lawton. Souffs got the run of 50-50 calls and we're lucky to get away with hat one.

I tend to agree with @blaza88z, I was Ok with the front part but the drive seemed unnecessary.

Against that, it wasn’t a drive with especial malice and Murray was safe.

It could have been a lot worse.

If the argument is that ruins the game early, that can’t be right, as it can’t be open slather for the first ten minutes as the injury toll is horrific as it is.

Given that value of a single game for a club is estimated at $3-$4m it’s a very heavy price to pay.

Manly are very competent they can beat any side on their day, A couple of lapses, but they got right in amongst the muck and did what they could. No points but I think they will get a lot out of it otherwise.

Good players don’t abuse their opportunities.

The guy is a muppet but I expect him to be dealt with too harshly. 2 weeks should suffice in all of the circumstances. Had he not been sent off, there was a 50/50 chance of a sea Eagles win based on their determination anyway. So a massive penalty for the club.

He looked totally shattered. Understandable. Lift up yourself buddy, what’s done is done.

Back in the day, that was closer to standard fare, but times have changed.

The circus that is our illustrious game, it’s both enigmatic and cruel at the same time.

Nowhere to hide!

You knew a tackle like this was always going to be a send off after the Tupou debacle. That said it was an ugly tackle and I thought he deserved to be sent off.

I felt like the Fox commentators played down the tackle. Those kinds of spear tackles break necks. He should definitely have been sent off and the book should be thrown at him. He had him in the upright position and then drove him down.

Really? Ah man I don’t know about that
Over reaction. 10 in the bin is enough .
Was so early in the game to make that call
Doesn't matter if it happened in the first minute of the game. I can't think of anything worse than a spear tackle. He literally drove his neck into the ground

I remember that tackle. It certainly didn’t get better with time.

Different code and only somewhat related but the All Blacks spear on Brian O'Driscoll was the worst I've ever seen.

Lawton wasn't at that level but it had all the same mechanics so I'm still perplexed people are arguing against a send off

I don't agree that it's a spear tackle, but I've been watching the game for about 40 years. I thought he just lost control of the tackle, and momentum got him beyond the horizontal and then into a dangerous position. Straight away he looked up at Croker, knew he'd f**ked up and I thought he was wondering where the 'second man in' was, to control the upper body.

Definitely a send off though, unless you're wearing a Storm or Roosters jersey.

It can't be open slather but being a player down under the current rules is almost insurmountable, especially for 70 minutes.

I would like to see them change the philosophy. Maybe in the case of a send off it is 10 minutes with 1 player missing and thereafter you can play with 13 but the person sent off can't return?

In the case of a sin bin I would either like to see a 5 minute bin introduced or the sin bin period ends if the opposition scores a try.

Orrrrr blokes could not do spear tackles?

I agree with the five minute bin but softening the send off solves nothing IMO. I don't care if it's insurmountable, if the play deserves a send off then send the bloke off. First minute or 80th

Good luck to young Lawton mate at the judiciary, whatever the penalty, he’s already done costly time.

Now I was bit surprised that Cameron Murray lost his head and snitched on him a bit after the game.

He seems to have broken the players sacred code.

He didn’t get hurt at all and he wasn’t solid.

Also the lack of vengeful players running in to take Lawton out.

It’s their captain ffs.

Soft.

Dylan Edwards got coat hangered by BJ, left it on the field and spoke in BJ’s defence at the judiciary. Solid young bloke.

I thought this game was very entertaining. Manly found an extra gear after Lawton got himself sent off. The comment Benji made about him at half time about being a good bloke made me laugh. I've always thought Lawton was a grub and that loss is squarely on him. Jason Saab is probably the worst defender I have ever seen. I get that his edge was always short of numbers but he always finds himself backpedalling. If he goes up and in he should commit instead of stopping then sliding across backwards.
Ilias is going to take a long time to establish himself. Once Cook straightened the attack there was always only going to be one outcome. The way Souths ran around Manly's middle 3rd around was pretty smart IMO.

*Edit* I think Egan is grub. For some boomer reason I got him confused with Lawton and I still don't know how because they don't even look alike.
Apologies.

What I'm saying is you can still disqualify a player without the team playing a man down. This happens in basketball, NFL etc. and no one seems to have an issue. He would still get punished for the tackle by a) not playing the rest of that game and b) a suspension.
