Channel Seven boss meets with V’landys about joining ARL Commission

ByMichael Chammas

March 14, 2024 — 4.56pm

A future role as an Australian Rugby League commissioner was discussed at a meeting between ARLC chairman Peter V’landys and outgoing Seven West Media chief executive James Warburton this week.
In a move that could have significant ramifications for the game’s next broadcast deal, negotiations over which are expected to formally begin within the next 18 months, V’landys has opened the door for the Channel Seven boss to take a lead role in the talks.

This masthead can reveal Warburton, who is a lifelong Canterbury Bulldogs fan, met with V’landys in Sydney earlier this week, where the prospect of Warburton joining the commission was floated.
Sources talking on the condition of anonymity in order to speak freely said Warburton is open to the idea of linking with rugby league in the future.

There is no vacancy on the eight-member independent commission currently, but the NRL is preparing to begin planning for the next television and streaming rights deal, with the current arrangement set to expire at the end of 2027.
When asked about the meeting with Warburton, V’landys declined to comment or confirm it had taken place.

“All I’ll say is there are currently no vacancies on the commission,” V’landys said on Thursday afternoon.
This masthead contacted Warburton, who also declined to comment specifically on the potential opportunity with the NRL.

“I’m focused on my transition at Seven and haven’t made any decisions on my future yet,” Warburton said.
Wayne Pearce has been on the commission since its inception in 2012, while Tony McGrath is the next longest serving commissioner with a decade under his belt.

Warburton, in his role as the boss of the Seven Network, worked closely with Fox Sports to secure a joint $4.5 billion deal with the AFL to keep the sport on the free-to-air network until the end of 2031.
The joint Fox Sports/Seven deal was worth a record $642 million per year and more than the AFL had counted on thanks to a $500 million bid from Nine Entertainment Co and a joint bid from Network 10 and Paramount Plus.

The NRL’s current TV deal, secured in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic, is worth around $350 million to $400 million per year for free-to-air, pay television, international and radio rights.
Warburton has a close relationship with Fox Sports boss Patrick Delany and strong ties to Seven West Media, who have long expressed an interest in securing the NRL’s free-to-air rights from Nine Entertainment Co, the publisher of this masthead.
He also negotiated a lucrative deal with Fox Sports and Network Ten when he was the boss at Super Cars.
Warburton was last year photographed at lunch in Sydney with V’landys and NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo in what was reported as a $150 million attempt to pinch rugby league’s showpiece State of Origin series from Nine.

It was reported that Seven wanted to launch a joint bid with Foxtel to simulcast the three games on Seven, Fox League, Kayo and 7plus.

The NRL is a proven rating’s winner. The grand final between Brisbane and Penrith captured a national audience of 3.6 million. The 2023 State of Origin series recorded audiences of 3.4 million (game one), 3.2 million (game two) and 2.6 million (game three).

But for a club side, its an odd choice right?

It would be like a QLD team wearing all maroon?

They are really pushing the whole state thing for Tassie at the moment. the colours, the jumper, the nickname, even the low key nature of the launches and live sites. its quintessentially Tasmanian.

its the traditional state jumper. its ugly, but still..tradition
90% of Tasmanian’s would not know that it was. When I was growing up it was certainly a big deal. Nobody under 40 would know or care. The days when people gave a flying feck about our State side died a long time ago.

Not really. The Mercury is ramping it up as if it’s the biggest day of our lives. Out in the burbs people are far more concerned about other things like housing and health. The vibe here is underwhelming. The stadium is very unpopular across all electorates and the libs have gone mute on it. This is not a happy place right now. People have to fly interstate to get basic health treatment. Housing is unaffordable. Footy team? Whatevs.

Yeah that`s the impression I got as well, what was meant to be the big start for the year for fumbleball and then coincided with the unveiling of the Tasmanian team has had all the oxygen sucked out of it - certainly up here and probably a little deflated in F-ball states - by the media tsunami and extravaganza that was Vegas making everything else look small time. especially a Tasmanian team.

It’s a side the afl doesn’t want. That’s clear. The idiot we have as premier has basically thrown our budget into chaos over this stadium.

The afl tv deal is dependant on a 19th team

if the tassie govt pull the plug they will still go wi try them

it’s just a huge bluff from fumble house

Was that while he was lying about qld afl participation figures?
Gill gave tv companies an extra round of games and an extra team then pretended any extra money was we just for the existing content

pvl is too smart to fall for this bs

the extra content we have for next time will be

two new teams
Pre season comp
End of season internationals
Expanded nrlw and origin

He’s even talking about introducing a cup style knockout comp

and then there’s the fact nrl ratings are growing whilst afl are stagnant

In the next Tav right round the NRL needs to lift the importance of the games being on free to air. Nine or whoever need to show more NRL games and Fox /Kayo needs to show more RL games like have schoolboys cup games on each week.
The A-league and Super rugby have died because of zero exposure so probably the inverse is true - the more exposure the bigger the sport gets.
