The idea isn’t bad

But afl have taken it to an extreme

Nrl is the other extreme

But storm are viable with the same grant heartland teams get

Giants suns lions and swans would all be broke tomorrow if they received the average afl grant

I would give regional nrl clubs an extra one million pa grant and intestate and overseas clubs an extra two million grant (but the same salary cap)

Money has to be spent on off field stuff that way that helps those clubs longer term
You're making an assumption on clubs ability to generate revenue there. Storm are one of the top earners and dont require more money. Its not about expansion or regional clubs v metro clubs, its about revenue generation ability.

Looking at the chart
Manly
Tigers
Sharks
Warriors
St George
Raiders
Titans

are the clubs who would benefit from a higher than base grant based on revenue generation.

Most have leagues club to fund their off field expenses

Plus funding regional clubs more encourages dragons and tigers to move full time to Wollongong and Campbelltown

Warriors storm titans can spend extra money on development officers or similar

Imagine the roosters / dogs / eels / all agreeing to take less money while manly / sharks get more ..

They can't even agree on finals home grounds.
Its not a case of taking less money for rich clubs. In AFL they have base grant that is same for everyone ($12.2mill). They they have additional payments on top of base based on a whole range of factors.
It seems to be creeping in for NRl clubs. There's up to $4milllion variability in NRL payments to clubs last year. eg Souths received $17.8mill, Broncos received $21.6mill

Major League Baseball (MLB) has a % share of their pool with the poorer clubs getting more (yes it's a luxury tax, but similar concept). Over there though it encourages the small market teams to deliberately reduce their expenditure so as to get a bigger grant. The owners can choose to pocket it or spend it to be competitive. Many pocket it.

i think you could do it if the money had to be allocated to specific things and spent each year. dont spend it you lose it situation.

sharks and Manly get 5m extra dollars each but every single dollar has to be spent on stadium amenities or towards women's facilities (sharks)
when the sharks club comes back online and they have more revenue and turnover their extra goes down etc

I mean that chart is essentially whats held nz 2 expansion back.

even if the prospect is high the numbers aren't exactly screaming absolute magnificence for warriors, therefore how would a club in a lesser populated region go? i get the whole tv revenue thing, i get the whole club grant thing but clubs still need to stand on their own and warriors are a strong brand yet languish bottom 4 in clubs profitability by its own metrics nz 2 would like be last, i mean papua will be last actually so nz 2 would be second last.

That’s Aussie dollars though converted back to kiwi dollars it’s still probably more than any super rugby team

It’s a small market overall but nz2 finances won’t be an issue for them with the stadium and backers they have

Plus juniors will be a goldmine

We don't know who NZ2 is so how can you say with their backers finances won't be an issue? Can you enlighten everyone who has been chosen as NZ2 and who their financial backers are so everyone can stop speculating?

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
Leaked NRL data underscores the fiscal strength of the Broncos – and why they sit alongside Collingwood as the most powerful brands in Australian sport.
Brisbane were kings of commercial revenue last year with $48.9 million, double the figure of the NRL’s second-ranked club the Cowboys ($24.3m).
They were also top dogs for sponsorship revenue with $15.5m, ahead of River City rivals the Dolphins ($11.1m).
The Broncos have a record 60,553 members – enough to fill Suncorp Stadium and still have a waiting list stuck outside – and Morris believes the 2025 premiership will trigger a commercial surge.

“It’s the power of the Broncos brand,” he says of the NRL’s benchmarking report.
“There’s no doubt when a club wins, it does financially better. It does better because we sell more merchandise, and the following year you usually find more people become members, so crowds are bigger, and success breeds success.
“People are seeing all the benefits of winning a grand final and it will play out over the next 12 months.
“Being a publicly-listed company, there’s a lot of things you have to do around governance, so there’s another layer of discipline to make sure that you are the best you can be.
“Another factor is the Broncos have always been an exciting team to watch. The NRL has had a spectacular year and it’s had benefits for the Broncos.
“We’re the No.1 sporting code in the country at the moment.”
THE FUTURE
A stockbroker by trade, Ord Minnett supremo Morris knows all about sustained performance in his own realm and is backing Maguire to lead the Broncos to back-to-back premierships in 2026.
“I love how Madge is talking about what we have to do to improve for next year,” he said.
“They are already thinking about more success, rather than getting caught up in the afterglow of the win.
“Nothing beats hard work and persistence.
“Maybe this is the beginning of something special. I don’t know if we can match the four premiership the Panthers won but our squad will definitely be competitive next year.
“Madge and the playing group want to make sure we are in the best position to go back-to-back.”

On track to turn over 100 million dollars

Which is on par with what the Aru turnover

They aren’t on par with collingwood.
Collingwoods revenue last year was $87.5mill.
West coast last year had revenue of $92.6mill
carlton had $97.5mill fc revenue making them the biggest sports revenue generator in the country.

nrl clubs are a long way behind when it comes to revenue generation. Largely due to smalller crowds and smaller membership bases.
