Which code has a larger upside is the main question - and I think it’s quite clear to anyone that the NRL is a sleeping giant. Could you say that about the AFL?
From any perspective the NRL has been badly managed, are now well managed & are lapping it up. clubs have been so poor, and continue to be badly managed.
The AFL can’t really do much to change what they do. They have largely topped out. It just is not a big sport in Sydney or Brisbane. They sell AFL well but they’ve been way ahead with everything before now. Money has allowed them to expand (poorly).
GWS have averaged 12k last year. They’ve been in business for 12-13 years. For the last 8 years they have been reasonably good, they obviously need to win a premiership, to take it further. The AFL is spending everything and hoping that it does that. Gold Coast pretty much is the same - 12-15k average. They’ve only got to 12th but been between 12-18.
In comparison, the largest bases in Sydney have been atrocious during our biggest growth period.
Tigers, dogs, dragons, souths, eels. Last 4 years has been attrocious. Despite that the game has been selling out home games. This did not happen previously.
The games are largely exciting and contested & regular upsets occurs - other than finals.
Once the NRL reaches potential the possibilities open up, comparison will only be about crowds. We are never going to be going for a 40k average as we don’t have stadiums that do that.
Ratings will continue to swing the NRLs way & then money decides who wins. NRL will move to app based revenue after 7 stops bankrolling it, and afl just won’t be able to keep up.
Just my thoughts..
