2024 Crowd Watch

I am amazed that the AFL has resisted spreading out the games so that don’t overlap. It would boost their ratings.

With expansion to 18 teams imminent, what is the likely 9th timeslot? Will it be crowd friendly or TV friendly?
Possibly because their games take too long? Clashes are more likely. Hard for them to do a Super Saturday like we do without starting a couple of hours earlier. Adding a 9th game for us will be relatively easy. A tenth not so.

Mate, take that shit elsewhere, who gives a f**k.
Lightweight game played by lightweights.
Mate it’s on point in relation to how difficult it is to maintain good crowds and reasonable tv time schedules which is an issue we will face as we expand mate.
And mate it’s good to learn from the experienced others. That’s logical mate. That’s what these discussions are about mate. How we set our game up for the future learning and adapting to suit our needs mate.
The fumblers can get stuffed but they are ahead of us on many levels and have made many good and many poor decisions. Nothing wrong from discussing those things and see how we can do better. Mate.

There are some on here who like to quote stats where the NRL leads the AFL or simply bring the AFL into a discussion when it has nothing to do with it, but as soon as someone lists where the AFL is performing better than the NRL or something the NRL can learn and improve on what the AFL has done, they get all upset. It's as though you are not allowed to follow or appreciate multiple sports. These people do realise that PVL holds high ranking positions in 2 sports which you could argue is somewhat of a conflict of interest as both sports are fighting for the same dollar of the public and sponsors.

That’s right. And it’s that inward thinking that has held us back for decades. The same people have no imagination about expansion to states outside nsw and qld because deep down they have no confidence in the game. Vlandys potential COI seems to have been managed but how would we know?. Overall I believe he’s been great for the game.

I think it’s quite clear to anyone that the NRL is a sleeping giant.

I personally hate this term. All it makes me think of is soccer. They've been claiming to be a sleeping giant in Australia for the past 30 years, but they still haven't woken up.

NRL definitely has more room and potential for growth than AFL, but soccer shows how easily that potential can be wasted.

Even if you don't want to compare the 2. RL had 2 Friday night games in recent enough to compare.

It also has the Sunday night v Monday night it can compare, Though if the NRL does reduce games than it needs to compare everything.

Because history shows Cows v Broncos rate on TV and has a huge crowd, Losing one of those games needs to be offset somewhere

Well Racing NSW has a relationship with ch7, If anything that keeps the contact there.

Particularly with sounding out things from the TV point of view. So things like that help, not to mention gets in bed with Betting companies to keep the illegal gambling somewhat at bay

Soccer will always stay the sleeping giant in Australia. It gets up every 4 years to go to the toilet (watch the world cup) and goes back to bed. 2 problems soccer has is 1) it is up against 2 major other winter sports in rugby league and AFL and despite moving to the summer months and also replacing the old NSL with the A League and the initial sugar hit it got it has remained a distant third and 2) the standard is relatively low compared to Europe and other leagues and people can compare it with those leagues given the amount of games shown on TV and at the same time whether you like league or AFL the highest standard is in Australia so these 2 sports don't have overseas rival competitions like soccer does.

As you said, up to league to take advantage of its current strength and not waste it.

Soccer can’t be a sleeping giant as it can’t get its shit together. It’s a subpar competition. No one in their right mind is staying in Australia. So it’s either a junior base or a retirement village. That’s never going to draw sustained crowds, interest etc.

The NRL is the premier rugby elite competition in the world regardless of code.
