For it to be awarded a penalty try the ref has to be 100% certain he would have scored a try. He had a fair crack at it and still couldn’t get a try but in the bunkers alternate universe a different bounce would have resulted in a try.

Absolutely pathetic officiating.
Same thing happened to us vs Roosters. Smithies lightly touched Keary’s shoulder in the field of play, Keary later knocked on in goal despite having a clear crack at it with nobody touching him. Result was a penalty try.

So they’re consistent. Consistently wrong, but still consistent.

Just checked the rule book because I was sure the 100% sure thing got removed a few years back.
And yeah, it currently says the ref has to have the opinion it would be scored, not be 100% certain.
