ah good old sport industry defending the fumblers

Not that any part of that conversation was actually wrong lol.

If its any consolation over in Bigfootys tv ratings thread they think im defending the NRL.

It's a reasonable question from a non-expert to the expert.

This new system purported to be more accurate and comprehensive. Reach is now the principal figure in ratings tables. Often not labelled, let alone explained. There's no 5-city breakdown, nor metro/regional split. Add to that the disappearance of Fox STB data. No small matter since that's where NRL heavily out-rates AFL.

I would say the average person is now less informed. Mostly in ways helpful to Fumble propaganda.

Heres the crux of the problem

The Networks think they can sell ads at a higher rate if they can show ALL possible viewers for a given program. The Networks own Oztam, so we get stuck with this. Theres some debate as to whether this is a reality or not.

The other issue I have is with data consistency.

Metro/Regional splits, and city by city are neither here nor there with me - networks are national, and their broadcasts for the most part when it comes to the NRL and AFL have national partners. As long as we get the average data for each game Im happy. But we arent.

On the one hand we're getting FTA Reach - but only for FTA produced matches - Seven doesnt acknowledge games it doesnt produce in its ratings reports - so we arent getting data for about half the AFLs matches on FTA so per game anaalysis is out the door.

What city by city data we have seen is average, and not reach.

We are getting extremely limited Fox STB data released, and thats all average audience, not reach.

We are at the mercy of whatever subscriber has access to the data and drip feeds us via whatever channel.

We are still getting Reach and average for streaming audiences on Fox as we did towards the end of last year. However Fox also believes that Oztam grossly underestimates its ratings by up to 40%, hence its move to Kantar. And who knows if we'll see any data from that.

I sympathise with you trying to make any sense of this and then being attacked by partisans of both stripes.

The standards will eventually kick in:
- afl ratings are higher than normal for the first 4-6 weeks of their competition
- nrl ratings tend to reduce also, but then with SOO they start to peak again and we get a 2nd wind
- nrl games are tighter this attracting more casual fans to watch anytime

@wookie are these correct statements

if and when the nrl plays another game per week which it will do, soon, we will regularly beat the AFL in aggregate

  • AFL Round 2 streaming audiences were up 23% year-on-year.
  • NRL Round 3 streaming audiences were up 13% year-on-year.
  • “The NRL in Las Vegas achieved its highest ever match ratings and the AFL is seeing double-digit lifts in streaming to start this season.”

impressive for both codes tbh. the more sport that is on, the more sport people are watching.

interestingly, the AFL has had 22 games played and NRL has had 24 games played given the opening round for AFL and the split round for NRL in round 1.

in 2 more rounds they'll both have played exactly the same amount of games for comparisons to be made, given they both started on the same weekend.

Bottom line, if that holds up throughout the year, which it generally does, especially with the reach difference being negligible, which cancels out all the nonsense about fumbleball games being more valuable to Fox because they are longer, then our broadcast deal with Foxtel should be correspondingly 22 % larger than f-ball. End of story.
