I dont think anyone belives they wont be putting an offer in. What that offer is is largely determinant on competition not on the fact 67 of the top 100 sports events were NRL. We've led PTV ratings for at least the last two tv deals and it hasnt translated into higher $ deals than AFL.

isnt this because afl have more teams and therefore can get more cash? didn't afl have stand alone channels ages before nrl got them which gave them another leg up as far as content? havent nrl been playing catch up in many regards including being settled and having their own cash in coffers which means if you have your own cash you can probably negotiate better as you arent reliant on the one source of income?

all thats aside isn't nrl overseas buy rates and worth way more than afl considering there's markets nrl have that afl only dreams on touching the tip? when its 20 teams a piece in each league i think nrl finally pulls ahead again for first time since early mid 90s

I read a press release by C7 the other day coinciding with their unveiling of their sports streaming service Seven Plus ( Seven+), they said the station was really going to go all in with integrating their live sports offerings, namely fumbleball, with it playing a central role in the station moving forward, this is all off the back of the importance that live sport has now for these FTA stations and their streaming arms. Expect to see the same thing from NIne/Stan and NRL.

Expect to see the same thing from NIne/Stan and NRL.

In which case the NRL should start publicly courting as many providers as possible to force 9 to offer a premium price if they want sole rights to our game. I’d prefer we used multiple providers to keep competitive tension on the boil.

Wouldn’t surprise me if seven and Fox put in a joint bid for origin at around 50 million pa

Stan have said previously they want to bid for all the nrl and haven’t extended the rugby union tv deal to get a warchest ready

I don’t even think the next tv deal is going to be a blockbuster like future deals once all the expansion teams are established and generating strong ratings

Yeah but that is where the world is heading. Most people have multiple streamers anyway, the EPL do it poorly having it on different networks each week.

As long x day is on x provider for life of the deal it won't be too bad. Can even opt in when good games are coming up that month

Yep.

NBA starts next year.

Deal was done. Amazon for example gets Tues, Thurs and a playoff round

And so on.

No reason we can't do that here and even bring ch7 in play for a night of NRL. Much more affordable than finding $120m for every thing

maybe kayo or stan pay for all games packages streaming
then fta split their telecast of games. something like

9 = 3 games spread thurs, friday & sun
7 = 2 games spread sat (maybe 5pm game) and sun (maybe 2pm game)

other 3/4/5 games depending how many teams are in comp on stream exclusive.

unless appletv want to buy all global league rights which means super league and nrl or even netflix decides to really up ante on live sports streams.

not sure how it would work, leave that for the people here who seem to be know it all's about everything like tv rights expansion stadium upgrades etc. they must work for nrl and foxtel and government same time. multi skilled

Most games are valuable. The issue comes when playing say NRLW on Midday Sat in close to TV's worst timeslot and both showing the game. Or Friday night on FTA when Fox is showing a game befo

More exclusives on both makes both more valuable

All the nrl needs to do is get a fair value for its pay tv deal and it will beat afl

And given fta has origin they are paying almost half what seven pay afl so its ridiculously cheap

Ho will it when FTA pay AFL a lot more than FTA pays NRL? It would need to cover that FTA shortfall then cover the PTV deal AFL got by their amount and add more than the FTA gap. That's quite a jump. Not impossible but will need rival bidding.

I said pay tv would pay the bulk and nine are getting nrl games for half what the afl pay … a bargain (once origin is excluded)

If seven bid for origin then nine is going to have to pay way more than they want too

so do you think FTA will pay a lot more this time? NRL has talked about selling off Origin separately for the last 3 deals but never eventuated. Maybe more appealing as a rep package this time with a RLWC in 2026 and increased womens and Int games?

I don’t think it matters a lot to the overall deal

I don’t think nine will pay much more for the fta rights unless seven / Fox bid for origin

Even then 150 to 160 million tops

Obviously even then taking out origin the nrl club comp is still way less valuable than afl is to seven

If seven and Fox did jointly bid for origin that would be a great result it would drive a lot of interest for the series

An issue with breaking up the TV rights among different providers showing games on different days as they do in the US is the population of America can sustain this break up and make it profitable for the provider. In Australia with less than 10% of the US population, and factoring in cost of living pressures, will enough people pay for multiple streaming providers to watch their team that could play on different days? eg, will they only pay for Foxtel that shows say Thursday and Saturday and also pay for Stan that shows Friday and Sunday. The diehards probably will but the casual fan maybe not.

Putting it another way, if Foxtel has say 2m people that only subscribe because they want to watch all the league games, will they all also subscribe to say Stan if games are split between the 2 companies? I doubt it and it would impact what each provider is willing to pay which may not total more than if only 1 provider won the rights.

The extra ad breaks have been discussed and won't happen in RL

But

Exclusive content is where the deals differ. Ch7 being able to show Eagles games exclusive into Perth for example is huge.

Need more content for FTA to improve that

I believe that 2025, you will need to subscribe to Kayo/Fox in order to watch AFL games for the first 8 weeks or so. Correct me if I am wrong @The_Wookie

This has come about as part of their new TV rights deal, and clearly Fox attempting to "copy" the NRL's Super Saturday formula.

It will be interesting to see what extra subscribers this draws, and what affect it has on Pay TV ratings.

Clearly Super Saturday is working for the NRL in terms of Pay TV ratings.

I'd say as what was cheap streaming becomes increasingly expensive we will see people jump around streaming services for periods of time rather than paying for multiple platforms. I know I used to have 5 streaming services when they were $10-15 each. Now they are $15-20+ I've cut down to 3 and likely to cull again.
