2024 TV and Streaming Ratings Discussion

I'd say as what was cheap streaming becomes increasingly expensive we will see people jump around streaming services for periods of time rather than paying for multiple platforms. I know I used to have 5 streaming services when they were $10-15 each. Now they are $15-20+ I've cut down to 3 and likely to cull again.

Until they bring in contracts though you can jump around. Like I get Netflix for 2 months at a time catch up. Cancel it get another and repeat

I believe that 2025, you will need to subscribe to Kayo/Fox in order to watch AFL games for the first 8 weeks or so. Correct me if I am wrong @The_Wookie

On Saturdays yes. Other days as per normal.

This has come about as part of their new TV rights deal, and clearly Fox attempting to "copy" the NRL's Super Saturday formula.

Fox have wanted the AFL to do this since 2002. The AFL didnt want to give up Saturday night coverage on FTA, but it really doesnt matter much because its generally split audiences anyway

It will be interesting to see what extra subscribers this draws, and what affect it has on Pay TV ratings.

Clearly Super Saturday is working for the NRL in terms of Pay TV ratings.

yeh but are you likely to do that for NRL? Not like you'll be on one showing FRI and SAT games then after 2 months jump to a different one showing Thurs and Sun games. I dont think Id subscribe to 2 or 3 services just to watch every game. Id probably only be on the one with the nights Im most likely to watch live.

Well no. Just tune in to whatever has my team playing on.

There lies why it hasn't been broken up before

There’s people on here who think dszn wont be bidding at all

Always people on here with these weird theories
If they miss out say goody to big numbers on KAYO and to lesser extent Foxel- definitely big KAYO will go down big time - thus all of Foxtel.... Therefor big $$$ loss. You could generate competition whereby you off Ten and Nine the whole package for $250m- 275 pa each. They can show two games on FTA the rest divided up between themselves on their Pay platforms. Nine Stan would go for it- they will increase their subscribers by the amount that doesn't have Kayo, or Kayo's 250,000 to 350,000 will migrate over to one or the other platforms. And how many will drop Foxtel itself or just scribe to one or the other Pay TV FTA operators, you dont have to have a exactly proposed idea to drop Foxtel, just a credible threat. Also what a about a single Buyer for the right price, this will keep the pressure on Foxtel like we have never before had.
350,000 subscribers by 42 weeks ( new improved preseason format and International format to Late Nov) equals 14,700,000 then that by $10 ie Ten dollars a week equals $147,000,000m pa

Well what about this.. paying a $tenna a week doesn't sound too outragous- maybe bring it down to $34 a month.....$8.50 a week.
check this out .. Reddy poo
The cost of the Foxtel sports package, which includes Rugby League coverage, has varied over the years due to factors like inflation, changes in broadcasting rights, and package offerings. Below is a general overview of how the costs have evolved:

Early 2000s:

  • Foxtel introduced dedicated sports channels, including Fox Sports, which began broadcasting Rugby League (NRL) games.
  • The basic sports package was around 20–20–30 AUD per month as an add-on to the standard Foxtel subscription.

2010s:

  • By the 2010s, Foxtel's sports package became more comprehensive, including multiple Fox Sports channels and exclusive NRL content.
  • The cost of the sports package increased to approximately 25–25–50 AUD per month, depending on the bundle and promotions.

2020s:

  • In recent years, Foxtel has faced competition from streaming services like Kayo Sports, which offers a more affordable alternative for sports fans.
  • The Foxtel sports package (including Rugby League) now typically costs around 54–54–58 AUD per month as part of the Foxtel Plus package or as an add-on to existing plans.
  • Kayo Sports, a Foxtel-owned streaming service, offers a cheaper alternative at 25–25–35 AUD per month for access to NRL and other sports.

So the punters will pay I will..

not really, the big boost in PTV audiences has come about due to being able to access streaming sport for much cheaper on Kayo (coinciding with Fox getting the rights to screen every game). Kayo is currently $25 month for a plethora of different sports (cheaper with a club membership $19.25). Cant see NRL getting many at $40 a month just for NRL.

If they had SL, NRL, French RL, Digicell cup, NRL nines, world nines RLWC and more tests then I would be wiling to pay $25-30 just for RL!

One booster could be for NRL to part own SL. Move the season to Jan- Sept. to cover some of the dead months for NRL. At the moment Having the season finish mid Nov and then no meaningful RL for 16 weeks isn't ideal for tv rights. But then winter in Uk isnt exactly conducive to open RL and the lack of pre season time from end of Int calendar becomes a problem.

“But live sport is one of the few ways to still reach many viewers and is considered valuable enough to pay for.

Stan began investing in sports content in 2020 after securing a $100 million deal with Rugby Australia to broadcast Super Rugby, Wallabies and Wallaroos matches. The streaming service is expected to sign a five-year extension with Rugby Australia as early as this month.
It is expected to be worth more than $30 million per year.“

Super rugby cut down their content by 25 percent and yet are still getting more money

I get the feeling Nine Stan are blowing their budget- So this makes the Ten ,Nine FTA play the more compelling. Nine will think we got the NRL again for the Little we payed last time, ( even though we they partner with ten with near equal rights. We say ( NRL) hang on their your 'partnering with Ten or you pay overs of what you payed last time...
They take the 2 FTA and SOS 3 and Grand final...otherwise they are.. shitsville

More like Nine are implementing a deliberate strategy to invest in streaming & build Stan sport into a genuine rival with fox/dazn. Look at what the market just valued Foxtel at, 70% more than what nine are currently trading at. They bid for the entirety of the afl rights, they had a nibble at buying Foxtel, they are now looking into Optus sport, the former commercial & content chief at Foxtel is now heading broadcasting at nine, now encompassing Stan… join the dots.
