They really need to stop scheduling Storm games directly against MCG AFL games. It can't be that difficult given the AFL released their schedule first (first 15 rounds with exact times).
Easier said than done, on a regular weekend there will be 4-5 games between MCG and Marvel. However, it makes sense to steer away from the known blockbusters which sometimes happens, and sometimes the scheduling works for punters wanting to attend AFL and NRL on the same day. I know it will horrify many here but fans of both codes do exist, especially in Melbourne.

I wouldn't have considered last night's AFL game as one to avoid scheduling against, Hawks/Blues is only ever a medium crowd. The heavy rain around 5-7pm probably turned more off than competing events. One day the powers that be will realise 8pm starts aren't appealing on a weeknight either, 7:15 or 7:30 would boost crowds a bit.

It's not that hard and undoubtedly makes some difference negatively to the storm crowd.

And I'm referring to direct clashes where the games are on at the exact same time, indirect on the same day is fine and can be beneficial in some cases.

Amazing really. High quality players, high win ratio, play in finals, single city team, what’s not to love. Storm are shoe in for the rest of their lives in finals / they have 10million people to source from whereas the dragons (my main team) have Wollongong

C’mon you lot, stop making excuses for Melbourne.

The best team for the past decade in a city of 5m.

Every game should be a sell out.

Torrential rain in the hours before the game, the fact Victoria's population is 6m, not 10m, and the fact it was the Storm's second best Thursday night crowd outside of ANZAC games - and it was on against an all-Melbourne AFL clash across the bridge at the same time.

"Stop making excuses for Melbourne" as though each game at each venue throughout the entire year for all 17 clubs doesn't owe itself to a unique set of circumstances that make a crowd bigger, smaller, or exactly as anticipated.

It's probably also worth noting that the 17,586 that attended last night is above Melbourne's historical average for every season prior to 2024.

"every game should be a sell out" lmao

Last week Roosters/Riff had just over 12,000 on a Friday night . What's the excuse for that
*Penrith v Roosters (it was a Penrith home game)

As discussed in this thread at length last week:
- hot day (mid 30s during the day, 30 at 8pm kickoff)
- Penrith playing first home game at Parramatta, 35km from their usual ground
- Major train delays all day and into the night prevented travel for many

Grandstand sales are better for tonight's Warriors v Roosters game than last week's match vs Sea Eagles.

Even Bay 9, which refused to sell last week, is down to only 14 seats. South Stand is possibly at a similar point to last week's game at kick off.

Warriors enjoyed over 1,000 walk ups last week. Hopefully we can see the same today.

If the NRL got their act together and scheduled the Storm/Riff game on Saturday night or Sunday arvo it would have been a sell out.
Channel nine gets first pick of games

Nrl don’t have a choice in general when games are on

Nine sees that time slot as the most important for the week
