My ideal setup is just to pause the competition for 3 weeks and have Men's Origin on Sunday Night and make it an all day event like the GF. You could play the Men's Under 19's Origin at 4pm?

They probably won't go that far but something will change.
The broadcasters will only go for that if they have content to fill Thursday, Friday & Saturday (especially Fox who won't want 3 empty weekends mid-season because they can't get the rights to Men's Origin).

The concepts of either bringing the NRLW forward and letting it fill the empty timeslots or making them rep weekends with WSOO & NZ/Samoa/Tonga Tri-Series are possibly the only potential options.

Stopping the comp for three weeks only to see a final game dead rubber would be ratings poison and might even shatter the momentum of the actual NRL season.

Yeah I’m not a huge fan of stopping the comp for the above reasons, it might suck out the momentum. the success of origin is both a blessing and a curse.

I think AFL may be the game for you - the only sport in the world where the height of athleticism is a glorified inter-suburban competition
So because I want a standalone Origin, you suggest I go follow AFL. That is the stupidest thing I've read on here and I've seen a lot.

You should have learned by now that people have different opinions about the game, that's why we are here.

Finding that content is the challenge. I'm not sure the NRLW will be the answer though.

But at the same time, we don't have to do everything the broadcasters want. The broadcasters want a night AFL GF, but the AFL don't. We should decide what we want as a game.

3 too many in my opinion. I don't think the extra money is worth screwing the season.

Clubs aren't happy with the current system anyway so something will change in the next broadcast deal, I'm certain of it.
People have been saying this fo the last 4 broadcast deals. They tried the Sunday night then changed it straight back.
You're kidding yourself if you think anything is going to change this time around. It's not perfect but there isn't really a viable solution.

I don't think anything is going to change in the current broadcast cycle. I said I think they will try something different for the next cycle. It might just be one standalone game instead of three.

Are you seriously suggesting the NRL sell its next tv rights by offering only 1 Origin game? That is the dumbest idea I’ve ever read in the crowd thread. Origin gives our code a decided advantage over the fumblers and proves 3 of the top five highest rating programs each year across Australian television. It provides us with 3 highest attended games. It dominates the media providing the nrl with endless publicity other codes could only dream of. Did you use to post under the name Ideas Man Steve? He had similar dumb ideas.

Either I didn't type that as well as I thought I did or you didn't read what I said lol. I meant they might have one standalone Origin and 2 mid week Origins. So Wednesday -Sunday- Wednesday. My point is I don't think they will stick with the current schedule in the next broadcast cycle because clubs aren't happy and fans are split atm.

It does give us an advantage but that doesn't mean we have to do everything the broadcasters want. I want the NRL to do what's best for the game, not the broadcasters. Look at the AFL for an example. The broadcasters want a night GF because they think more casual viewers will tune in.

No. But I'm assuming you used this as an excuse to insult me again.

With 18 teams soon and trying to lessen SOO on the season , 3 games each weekend ( Thursday, Friday & Saturday night) with SOO Sunday night 3 weeks in a row every team gets 2 weeks off and will only be missing their stars for 1 game and still have content . Only interrupts the comp for 3 weeks. Probably no Thursday night game after origin 3 so players have a 5 day turn around. Just a thought
And reducing NRL to 22 games

I’d have both Mens & Woman’s double header on three consecutive Sundays.
The odds would be against both being dead rubbers.

Well Steve all I can say is good luck to anyone trying to sell a tampered version of origin with the next rights! Nobody in their right mind is going to feck around with the roller coaster success of this series.

I don’t like the scheduling of the women’s series before their nrlw competition. But it does feed off the men’s series. It’s a great problem to have. This third men’s game is going to be sold out and rate it’s socks off.

You could play Origin at Christmas time and broadcasters would still pay big money to broadcast it.

9's preference is Wednesdays to maximise viewership but that comes at a cost for the NRL competition. In my opinion you need to strike that right balance between maximising viewership, but keeping the competition as fair and balanced as possible.

Obviously if money wasn't an issue I would love Origin standalone on Sunday night but as I have said, it likely wont happen anytime soon. In saying that, I'd love to know how much more money the broadcasters would pay for Wednesdays compared to a standalone Sunday.
