Why does it need approval from all clubs? Melbourne did it for years and they were the only ones. Rabs calling Fifita "Maola" was glorious

The biggest issue is, most folks like 1-17 on the players jerseys. Names aren’t a problem but folks don’t wanna see # 8 on the wing or #45 at halfback.

i reckon this is overstated. Youd have a few compain, but theyll watch all the same

meanwhile, promotion is enormously more effective.

just think about the NBL and test your reaction when you just see some numbers

24
6

if that made you think of 3 players, then you have to admit that it is powerful kn building a player’s individual brand

the name on the front of the jersey is more important than the name on the back of the jersey.

that said -i would rather see a players surname rather then a sponsor on the back of a jersey.

if they do it - all clubs have to commit - it will look stupid when one team has it and the opposition does not.

Though if it goes ahead and you see financial success for clubs from it - everyone jumps onboard quickly

I'm a fan of squad numbers, following the ESL approach that your starting 13 gets their relevant position numbers, and the rest of the squad goes from there.

I think it adds some prestige to the numbers when a player can only a position number at a club, especially for a number of years. For a young halfback coming up at Penrith, you want to be the one who takes the number 7 jersey off Cleary for example.

As for people complaining about say number 45 taking the field, it never use to be an issue when we use to have Reserve Grade, President Cup, etc. When you saw one of those higher numbers take the field, you knew it was someone who had come up from one of the other competitions. I'm sure very quickly people would view it the same way.

45 wasn’t an issue when all 3 grades played at the same ground etc. I also think folks are conditioned to look for 1-13. But it’s not the end of the world if it changed.

I personally don’t have issues with players having their name and a number. I can live with 45 on the wing and 76 at lock.

It would be very interesting to see a club’s marketing numbers if they did go that way. You’d imagine if Player X knew he shifted 10,000 jerseys a season, he’d def want a cut of that.

Great idea, but the way clubs designs kits especially with the massive rectangle sponsor box that is usually white... its going to look worse... the NRL need to go the way of the premier league sleeve sponsor, main sponsor and names on the back.

I'm not sure your take on Super League's numbering is correct @Nuke - all 12 squads have named their player numbers for 2025 and we're still 10 days away from season kickoff.

While most players' numbers in the first 13-17 usually do align with positions I don't think they're allocated in the way you've suggested.

2025 SL squad numbers for reference: https://leagueunlimited.com/news/41625-2025-uk-squad-numbers/

As @yakstorm said bigger numbers (30+) aren't an issue - were fine in the past ala Reserve Graders, and are common particularly later in the season in Super League and the Championship too.
