After reading your post, I had to check out this BF.
Are they on crack? They seriously think that AFL is taking over Brisbane and will be bigger than League within 10 years.
They actually believe this...
How do the AFL crowd manage to be this delusional? I've been in a bar in Melbourne before, listening to a chat between blokes, saying League is a dying game. I thought it was just 2 morons but.. it's not!
It always blows my mind that the general population can be so uninformed in this day and age.
You haven’t been to the 20th Team thread where they have spent the last 5 days planning a team in Newcastle. Did you know there is a strong AFL presence on the Central Coast?

My fave is where they’re discussing/arguing over names for a Sunshine Coast Team .😂like it’s a foregone conclusion it’s gunna happen then be successful.
then it dawns on them there’s no stadium so they come up with a solution.
The Qld Govt diverts some $$$ away from the Olympics to build an AFL stadium on the Sunny Coast .

Crazy ratings, even my most optimistic expectations were easily beaten. I can actually see why BF is going off like that, it almost feels unreal the sort of growth the NRL has seen this year. You literally couldn’t write a better script as TV negotiations begin. If we can’t smash the AFL deal this time we never will.

The Sydney ratings are possibly the most impressive thing. In the past one of the reasons AFL tend to be in front is because Melbourne rates so much better than Sydney. Yet despite no Sydney teams it was one of the highest ever and well up on last year featuring a Sydney team, just wild really.

The WNRL ratings are almost as impressive and are a massive win for the NRL. If we can get women’s SOO and GF to keep growing like they are the women’s game may actually start adding quite a bit to the TV deal.

A bonus is NRL & NRLW are put on a level pegging with matches on weekends airing beside each other and the two GFs played same day. There’s also been a lot of work, attention put in to SOO-W and the women’s international game, so those products are not some weak, lip service product but fully fledged footy. Despite criticisms over the past decade, they’ve really embedded the women’s game as part of the whole and their profile continues to grow and improve. Kudos to everyone involved and it enhances the tv rights immeasurably.

Amazing ratings, that’d have to be the highest ratings for a rl game in perth ever? Those Melb numbers are off the charts as well.

I know it`s not going to happen every year but I`ve loved the way the Bronx have included the Women`s team in all the festivities after the GF, it`s such a great look seeing the female stars out their mixing it with the fans with the men. Goes directly to your point about "embedding the women`s game as part of the whole".

I saw someone else post something like that, what sort of things are they saying over there, would love to know but just can`t bring myself to go on there.
Lions being on track to become bigger than the Broncos in Brisbane is one of my favourites, along with Swans being the biggest sporting club in Sydney.

Oh and they brag about AFL having a bigger footprint in NSW/QLD than the NRL do in SA/WA/VIC/TAS while ignoring the facts such as AFL in NSW/QLD having a head start of 80 odd years over Rugby League in SA/WA/VIC/TAS.

they were saying the same thing back in 2001.

just have to look at some of the social media numbers, Broncos = over 600k followers on instagram, Lions have 270k.

Reece Walsh has 585k followers, there would be no Lions player within cooee of that. In fact I wonder if there would be any AFL player with that many followers

If you've ever set foot in Brisbane for more than the day you went to the Gabba to watch the lions.. you would put the conversation in there with our migration to mars.
AFL is taking over Brisbane in the same way NRL are taking over Melbourne... They are both doing well in these expansion cities but it has more to do with the fact some people just prefer the other and now have the choice..as they're both completely different sports.
The imbedded culture of chat about sports on the weekend at work or school on a Monday morning isn't suddenly changing after over a hundred years.
That'll probably take another 100 years and some big events to change.
