yes, also skynz
Do you happen to know the revenue earned per player for nrl vs afl?

I guess taking total revenue for the year and dividing it by the total playing roster. Would be interesting to see if nrl punches above its weight on this which is what I suspect.

as in total league and club revenue? media revenue? women and men?

AFL clubs have up to 44 players per mens team, including rookies (18) and 30 per womens team (18) = 792 men, 540 women, 1332 total
NRL clubs have up to 36 players per mens team, including development players (17) and 24 player per womens team (12) = 612 men, 288 women, 900 total

The AFL in 2024 made $1,032b - $774k per player
The NRL in 2024 made $744m = $827k per player

The AFL TPP in 2024 was 15.8m for men per club = $359,090 per player (average). Base AFL distributions cover abut 11m of this per club.

The NRL salary cap in 2024 was 11.25m for men per club = $312,500 per player (average). The NRL salary cap is entirely fundd by the NRL under the 130% rule.

Thank you, good point about looking at salaries as well. I put your data through AI to figure out the returns on this for nrl and afl. See below.

When you compare the AFL and NRL on player costs versus revenue, the numbers show that the NRL is punching above its weight more than the AFL.

  • The AFL generated $1.032b in 2024, with around 1332 listed players (men + women), which equals $774k revenue per player.
  • The NRL generated $744m, across 900 players, which is $827k revenue per playermore revenue per athlete than the AFL.

Looking at player payments:
  • AFL men’s total player payments: $15.8m per club → $359k average per player
  • NRL men’s salary cap: $11.25m per club → $312.5k average per player

This means:

LeagueRevenue per PlayerAvg Player CostRevenue per $1 of Salary
AFL$774k$359k2.16x
NRL$827k$312.5k2.65x ✅

Even though the AFL makes more in total dollars, the NRL extracts more revenue per player and gets better commercial return on its player investment. It also spends a smaller percentage of revenue on player salaries (25.7% vs 27.6% for the AFL).

should be another 0.3m for developing players in the NRL lists. (+5.1m)

AFL Player salaries are mandated at 27% for the AFL (and includes some club revenues) in their CBA
NRL Player salaries were mandated at 28% for the NRL in their CBA (but does not include club revenue), but the NRL offered 40% of consolidated revenue in their 2023 negotiations.

Not just bigger squad sizes which hurt them financially

They have to spend a lot of money on juniors themselves whilst nrl has leagues clubs

Plus they have their failing expansion sides taking so much money too

Even with an extra 200 million in revenue it’s the same as the nrl which has a lower cost base and Pvl runs a much leaner and more efficient operation

Thanks Wookie, updated with your extra info:

When you compare player cost vs revenue, the NRL actually punches above its weight more than the AFL despite being a smaller competition.

  • AFL revenue 2024: $1.032b across 1,332 listed players → $774k revenue per player
  • NRL revenue 2024: $744m across 900 players → $827k revenue per player ✅

Player payments (men only)

  • AFL total player payments: $15.8m per club → $284.4m total
  • NRL salary cap: $11.25m + $0.3m for development players = $11.55m per club → $196.35m total

Revenue efficiency

MetricAFLNRL
Avg player salary$359k$321k
Revenue per $1 of salary2.16x2.58x ✅

So even though the AFL makes more total revenue, the NRL generates more revenue per player and gets better commercial return per dollar spent on talent.

CBA context (important)

  • AFL player share: 27% of revenue (includes some club revenue)
  • NRL player share: 28% of NRL revenue only (excludes club revenue)
  • In 2023 negotiations, the NRL actually offered 40% of consolidated revenue (NRL + club revenue), which would outperform the AFL model if adopted.

Conclusion:

The NRL is leaner and more efficient than the AFL when it comes to revenue generated per player and value extracted per salary dollar. The AFL is a bigger business overall, but the NRL gets more commercial output from its playing group and could soon surpass the AFL in player revenue share under a consolidated model.

If the NRL makes 2.58x revenue return per every dollar spent on players, I wonder how that compares to other worldwide competitions. Would be interesting to see a list of this.
