2026 NRL Draw

Comes out a week or two after the GF yeah ?

Looks like its going to be wickedly different from previous years

Using AI, what could go wrong ?

Gus Gould a big AI guy ?? Though 'backroom operations' sounds dodgy as f..k.....

Peter V’landys has announced a major shakeup to how the NRL draw will be structured for the 2026 season.

The premier Rugby League competition is set to incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) after V’landys described the process of arranging the schedule as “so complicated”.

These developments come after the NRL head honcho spoke on Tuesday morning at the NRL and NRLW grand final breakfast, alluding to broadcasters and clubs combined with events like State of Origin, Las Vegas and Magic Round all requesting specific slots on the calendar.
“We had a big workshop on the draw because it’s so complicated,” V’landys said

“I’ve never seen anything quite like it, the variables that are in it. The broadcasters get a pick, the clubs get a pick, there’s the Magic Round, there’s Vegas, there’s all these different (factors).

“This year, we’ve got a program that uses AI because of all the different requests and algorithms.”

This isn’t the first time this year that we have seen AI used in the Rugby League space, however.

Canterbury Bulldogs General Manager Phil Gould revealed in July that the Belmore club was using the tool “for everything”, creating a tailored system for coaching as well as backroom operations.

In the past, the NRL have used a foreign firm to assist with draw scheduling, something V’landys suggests will continue to be utilised.

“I think it’s American now, so there’s a bit of a tariff on it, but that’s alright,” V’landys said.

“This is the first year we’ve used this program.”

Part of the draws reforms includes the potential for a daytime grand final.

Sticking to the traditional Sunday, but moving it back prior to the 7:30pm timeslot that it currently holds.

“It’s certainly part of the consideration,” V’landys said.

“I think it’s proven that Sunday afternoon football is very successful.

“We looked at it last year and I said to our management team, we’ve got to move to Sunday afternoon (for finals). They all looked at that strange, but the beauty about Sunday afternoons, it’s a premium time.

“The thing is Sunday afternoon has certainly proven to be a winner, and we’re going to have to convince a lot of people, including the broadcasters, that Sunday afternoon was the way to go. Now they’ve seen it for themselves, it might make it a bit easier.”

4pm Sunday GF kick-off works too. Same start time as a usual Sunday match, loads of lead-time before hand for earlier game and to make a day of it - and can have dinner afterwards, followed by Labour Day public holiday.
Yeah.
Play the Womens GF after the Mens like all the smart clubs do like Our Eels.

3pm GF kickoff for mine

Id imagine Ch9 would want the 6pm news to be on point, which to be fair draws in huge number for them

3pm gives them post game time to show the presentation, interviews, and wrap up the year

Also like 3pm as its closer to the BBQ lunches going around can lead into the pregame/game more naturally

We can all go about our normal lives after 6pm, unless it was Parra who won it of course

Yep. Lunchtime. Then 1.00pm NRLW kickoff, 3.30pm NRL kickoff, then wrap up for 6:00pm news (or dinner/drinks). Would mean a 5.30pm telecast in NZ.

Everyone's a winner. No idea why we even started playing the thing at 7.30pm in the first place...

Supposed to be 32 degrees at 3pm tomorrow at homebush. Would be a turn off for people sitting and cooking in the sun with a 80k crowd all jammed in.

I imagine thats a turn off for broadcasters and players as well.

With daylight savings starting tomorrow its effectively a 2pm kickoff then.

I think in 2009 it started at 5pm which is effectively 4pm kick off.

I think thats the sweet spot personally you still get a daytime grandfinal and it finishes in the twilight zone of just before 7pm.

Plenty of time to celebrate afterwards as well.

Was 8pm for the first ever one in 2001

By god that was an extremely long day to wait for the kick off,

Longer night after we lost , I was one of the last to leave the ground .'sniff'

Got home after midnight (lived in parra back then) and watched the game again, and thought we could do it in the second half of the second half lol just seemed surreal I watched us lose live, after the steam rolling season we had

Can we f**k the women’s game off back where it deserves?

It’s overly pretty shitful and the game before it deserves to be given to the NSW vs QLD Cup game which is always full of young guns to watch and former NRL players.

The women’s game should be at 10am for the short to medium term at the least.

Play the womens GF on the Saturday night...

Play the CUP prior to the NRL GF and bring in the NSW flegg winner v the QLD under 21 winner 10 or 11 am start.

Even better. There is a great place for the women’s game, but the fact it’s just been slapped into the 2nd prime spot since its beginning despite being the worst quality is bullshit.

I'd be happy with a NSW Cup vs Qld Cup grand final day game. Though given money invested I don't reckon it will ever get to be the final curtain raiser clash?

Golden point might f**k it up, but:
12pm NSW Cup winners vs Qld Cup winners (and 15min presentations)
1.45pm NRLW Grand Final (and 15min presentations)
3.30pm Pre-match entertainment/whatever
3.45pm NRL Grand Final (incl 15min halftime entertainment and 30min presentations)
6pm Ch9 News / dinner or (more) drinking

Sorry mate, but I disagree.
NRLW compares quite favourably in level to womans cricket, football, tennis and golf.

If you want to watch a really shite quality of woman's sport, try watching ANY game of AFLW.
I honestly don't like the suggestion (by you or others) that the NRLW GF gets relegated to a different day.
What a slap in the face that is for the woman's game.

They probably won't get a full house the first year but you can bet they will at least get 20k plus on a Saturday night GF... It's a win win for the NRL as they already were getting a sell out for the sunday.

How is it a slap in the face? Getting their own GF day is great. Not being relegated to the pre game for the men's NRL..

So the Roosters vs Broncos, if played at Allianz tonight would get 20 000?
Ok then.

They are not being "relegated" to pre-game.
They are playing on the same day as the biggest game in the calendar.

The slap in the face to the fans is the fact the Roosters and Broncos have basically got a monopoly on the top talent.

I agree with what someone said earlier give them there own timeslot on the Saturday night

And you actually have more Rugby league content across the long weekend.

The highest ranked team hosts the GF as well.

And all members get a discount to the home GF entice a big crowd on the Saturday night.

So we have a GFs on Saturday and Sunday
