How exactly did the NRL have anything to do with Penrith becoming a super team? It was just a perfect storm. An amazing lots of juniors coming through, very competent management and a once in a generation coach. It’s absolutely insane to suggest the NRL caused this or even necessarily would want this (there are multiple other bigger clubs the NRL would want at the top I’m sure).

Truth is there are just a lot of mismanaged teams in the comp. Just look at the tigers, they’ve had all the talent required to be right up there but their management just keep f**king things up.

People complain about the NRL or lack of talent when the real problem is NRL clubs full of nepotism and run like chook raffles.

If the NRL could've picked any team in Sydney to become a super team and win 4 in a row it wouldn't of been f**king Penrith. In fact I'd say Penrith would've been in the bottom 3 choices.

Parramatta, Wests tigers , St George and Canterbury would've been top of that list in the NRLs eyes.

There's no reason any of those teams can't emulate Penrith in the future.

Don't forget a rule change in the six agains which has benefited them quite a lot.

It is what it is. I'm personally bored of them and would rather other teams do well but what can you do.

To be fair, you are just equating number of people equals bigger club. I think you have to take into account access to corporates/third parties and media space/concentration.

The game is and will always centred in and around Sydney and to be honest all of those clubs you mentioned, find it difficult to access corporate dollars (it is what it is) nor get any attention from the media or the NRL at large.

It’s not anybody’s fault and it is not really a negative per se, it is just always going to happen.
I'm not arguing that Sydney isn't the main centre of the game, I'm not sure why you would think that.

My argument is that clubs that people think of as being regional and small (mentioned multiple times in this thread) are actually bigger than some of the Sydney clubs - not only that - but they are some of the NRL's greatest assets.

The Sydney clubs might have "access" to more corporates but there's 9 NRL clubs there (plus all the other sports franchises in other codes) so those corporates, third parties and the media space gets divided up, albeit unevenly. Hence why you'll always have bigger Sydney NRL clubs and small ones (it's a similar story in Melbourne with the AFL).

As for number of people = bigger club, it's not a given that they'll be a bigger club as a guarantee (there will always be bigger Sydney clubs than the Knights, Cowboys, Titans etc), rather that their underestimated market sizes and effective lack of competition means that they can overcome Sydney clubs who exists in Sydney enclaves (Sharks, Sea Eagles etc) which they haven't broken out of.

For example, yeah the Sharks are in the massive Sydney market. But they'll always be the 8th or 9th ranked Sydney club in terms of support and it will never change based on those demographics. Whereas a club like the Knights is in a market that's essentially three times the size of Sutherland shire with no other NRL competition, that can directly tap into a $90-$100 billion GDP economy (Hunter, Newcastle and Central Coast) compared to the Sutherland Shire's $15 billion GDP or the Northern Beaches $22 billion. And what's the Knights' competition? The Newcastle Jets. If I had to choose which to invest in in terms of which will have the strongest future, I'd go the 'small regional' teams like the Cowboys, Raiders and Titans over the Sharks or Sea Eagles. Being in Sydney isn't enough. They need to either go big or they'll be left behind, even by regional clubs.

Just some exclusive market comparisons:

Knights = Newcastle, Lack Macquarie, Hunter = 700k (1.1 million if you include Central Coast)

Titans = Gold Coast (640k) and Richmond-Tweed (260k) = 900k

Cowboys = Townsville (260k) and Cairns (250k) but really they were the only local alternative to the Broncos for decades. So it's between 500k - 1million - depending how far south you go.

Raiders = ACT = 454k (not including Southern NSW)

Dragons = Illawarra (314k) + St Georges district

For comparison:

Sharks = Sydney-Sutherland = 230k

Sea Eagles = Sydney-North Beaches = 265k

I think this is what codes like AFL and people in Sydney don't get. Some of the NRL's regional clubs are already bigger than Sydney NRL clubs. If clubs like the Sharks and Sea Eagles don't expand outside their enclaves, the gap will grow wider. And codes like AFL will never appeal to areas like Newcastle unless they put local clubs there (which if they do, will be bigger disasters than GWS/Suns).
Maybe we could merge Manly and the Bears.

Yeah nah. The regional teams aren’t at all important to the competition at large.

Sure mate every team can win a competition one day.

The NRL only want a few teams to succeed. It is a business after all.

I do agree though that some teams are run very poorly. The competition in reality should be split in two. Keep 8 or so for the first division send all the rest to NSW or QLD Cup

It might turn out great for nrl growth in Sydney that it’s Penrith that has become a super team. With the new airport, population growth and commercial activity happening out that way, getting a whole generation of kids out there to fall in love with the panthers might inadvertently be a master stroke

Easter Monday public holiday and no NRL game on FTA... the Hawks v Cats blockbuster should see astronomical ratings today. The atmosphere at the G sounds electric with 90k screaming fans.
