I see that this Friday the AFL is showing two Friday night games.
7:20pm Geelong vs Western Dogs
7:50pm Swans vs Giants
This is intended so the Swans game can be shown live on Channel 7 in NSW for maximum ratings. The Swans v Giants game would normally be on Saturday night however under the current broadcast deal this would mean a Foxtel exclusive telecast, and a 2 hour delay on FTA in NSW.

Why not just show Swans vs Giants nationally then?

Cats v Dogs will rate far higher in Victoria. This would be a Channel 7 decision.
I can understand the Geelong game in Victoria but the all-Victorian game is everywhere else around the country too. Clearly Channel 7 thinks that the Swans vs Giants game wouldn't rate well outside of NSW.

It's cause they don't want to admit their league is effectively VFL with some token sides thrown in there.

They are so heavily weighted to appease to Victoria it's sickening.

All the talk of 'national' this and that is a smokescreen and PR play. They had an Opening Round with the supposed purpose of attracting NSW / QLD eyeballs to it, but then haven't played a game in Sydney since so it just shows it was a tokenistic gesture. They buried the Swans / Suns gather round game in a tiny suburban ground which is a top 4 clash, behind a Geelong game on the Friday night at adelaide oval on prime time. They're also burying the big Sydney derby behind another game as well resulting in clash - obviosuly they don't think it will rate.

Realistically Fumble fans just want to watch Victorian Fumble teams go around. That's why they do shit like this.

They can't just pick and choose which game to air into each state. Swans-Giants is a Foxtel produced game, which Seven is able to simulcast live into NSW/ACT under the home state coverage provision of the broadcast deal. This is why most of the games selected for "national" coverage heavily skew towards Victorian teams; all non-Victorian teams are guaranteed FTA coverage of every game into their home market anyway.

That's backwards logic trying to justify the scheduling. The AFL could have scheduled this as the only game on a Friday night and played the Geelong game on the weekend. They chose not to. The answer is obvious as to why. They think the Swans vs Giants would be smashed nationally on its own.

They're also doing the same in Round 8 with the Adelaide derby game.

AFL is very Victorian-centric. It thinks those games have little appeal outside their home states. They think games involving Geelong and the Western Bulldogs have more appeal in places like Queensland because the game is mostly supported by ex-Victorians there. It's as simple as that.

Meanwhile people in NSW will happily watch all-Queensland derby NRL games or Storm vs Broncos games without a fuss. Queenslanders regularly watch all-Sydney NRL derby games.

The AFL seems to have little faith in its non-Victorian teams.

I guess this is true, just as the NRL is effectively NSWRL with some token sides thrown in there.
Nope wrong again fumble boy, Storm and Broncos are two of our top rating teams - neither of which are from NSW.

while we have a lot of teams from nsw, there’s significant national interest in our non-nsw teams. Unlike fumble, where all the ratings and focus is on the Victorian teams.

If you go off combined social media adding up TikTok, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook last year it went:

NRL Broncos 2.1 million
NRL Storm 1.6 million
NRL Rabbitohs 1.47 million
NRL Warriors 1.43 million
AFL Collingwobbles 1.37 million
NRL Panthers 1.29 million
AFL Hawthorn 1.13 million
NRL Canterbury Bulldogs 1.11 million
NRL Parramatta Eels 1 million
NRL Cowboys/AFL Essendon 950,500

Wherever there are Queenslanders, there are Broncos fans.
Wherever there are New Zealanders, there are Warriors fans.
The Rabbitohs have the Rabbitohs guy meme based on the fact their fans are everywhere.
And now the Storm have overtaken the biggest AFL side too.

And then there`s Reece Walsh, just the fact that one League player can have a bigger social media presence than any individual club of any code says something about the potential of the sport in this country.

Yeah but think about it this way. An AFL player appeals basically to their own club. A player like Reece Walsh is not just followed by Broncos fans, but also Maroons and Kangaroos fans.

Fun fact: when you add up all the club social media followers, NRL beats the AFL by 700,000 on Instagram and 1,700,000 on TikTok. And that's with the NRL having 1 fewer club. Just further proof that the NRL skews to a younger audience. But those are the followers that can push a player like Walsh to those kind of SM numbers.

I was at Parramatta Westfield recently, JD Sports have got a giant television screen out front of their store, maybe 3m x 3m, Brian To`o was on loop dancing and carrying on with about a 30 second ad for sports shoes, fumbles just don`t have anyone that can do that stuff. Isaac Heeney, Toby "hardman" Greene. The propect is laughable.
