Found this at the WARL website.

Anyone think it will be a success? With a World Cup coming up it might indicate the potential for holding pool matches in Perth or the support for rugby league in case the NRL ever wants to promote the WA Reds again

These matches are generally held every year. They are used to select the state side and since there are a lot of kiwis in the comp it is the best form of possible vs probables game

They've spelt 'Tasman' incorrectly. A little embarrassing.

There's more than this happening in WA - most notably the WA Reds coming into JBC next year.

So this doesnt get too many people going? Just figured if theres support for these type of events (even if they are just a selection trial) there would be hope to expand the game into Perth/WA. I dont know if the ARL is really going to support the game in WA until its forced to by growing community support.

Plus id love to see the World Cup used to expand support for the game in Aus, even if in some places it doesnt turn a profit. What do you reckon... a world cup game getting held in Members Equity would be good or bad?

I think it would be great to have world cup game in Perth particularly a high profile game. League draws pretty good crowds in Perth but the fact that high profile games as so infrequent means it is hard to build on the success. The last NRL game we had was in 2005!

It will get a respectable crowd for the WARL but nothing substantial.

Give us a Kiwi v England game and we'd get 25,000+ to it!

The game you've highlighted is an annual trial for State team places as mentioned. Usually draws a couple of hundred but if at MES and marketed it would get more. Unfortunately it is at Sth Perth which is just a playing field with a clubhouse so will will generate little interest.

Until the NRL gets serious about WA I am afraid there will be little community support. It took the ARU 3 years of promotion and internationals until there was enough interest for the Forces succesful bid.

Well im right behind you guys in getting world cup matches played there. And since i read somewhere that Perth's immigrant population is dominated by NZ and England i think it should definetly get a Kiwi's v England game plus a Australia v some small country. Unfortunately it would be stupid to get the big matches there but definetly need to have the home team play there once.

Pity about the local trans tasman game. Some strong leadership by WARL or ARL is needed to give the game a boost. Hope the Western Reds jolt those guys into some action on that side of the country. We really need Perth to be one of the next teams admitted (them and prob Wellington or at least some NZ team). National comp gives greater exposure to advertisers and more money to the comp. And when you think about it WA is all we need to be national. SA isnt really a big enough market to truly make a difference to NRL's revenues (although id like to see a team in every market at some point in the future).

Yosh we have finally got some great people at the WARL with a strong vision and a committment to get there. The local comp is getting stronger and they have a set timetable and framework for a franchise bid come 2012.

Unfortunately what we don't have is an ARL or NRL that has the same vision. The ARL has been somewhat more supportive over the last couple of years but despite Gallop's rhetoric the NRL just don't seem interested in developing in the most prosperous city in the country with the 3rd strongest RL scene.

The ARU had the vision of how beneficial a Perth team could be and 6 years ago started to put on Internationals and pumped plenty of development money into the game here. 3 years of hard work meant that when the franchise bids came around Perth was a shoe in and a great foundation had been built for the start of the Super 14 franchise.

The NRL seems to be far more reactive than proactive and until that changes I can't see your sig happening for a very long time!

This sounds like a decent fixture, but just outta curiosity, why isn't it being played at the Joondalup Arena? I thought that was the home of WARL

The Joondalup Arena is the home of the Joondalup Giants ... not the WARL!

The WARL's home is MembersEquity Stadium (where the Perth Glory soccer games are). I don't know why the WARL aren't playing the Perth City vs Perth Kiwis there ... I guess it costs too much for a game not many people are gonna turn up for.

1. Great to see that there is a strong vision and stratgy for the growth of league and acceptance into the NRL. Keep yp the posts on any developments.

2. Cant understand why gallop reckons 10 years. I cant see the logic to it. I can understand 5 years or 6 - 7 but definetely no longer. Part of me wants to think that he doesnt want to give a heads up to union and AFL in WA about the planned arrival of league and them putting greater efforts into stopping it. But i dont think thats it.

Put a bit of thought into it... Clearly the best way to get help in the growth over there is through ARL. If the local leagues can continue to grow, crowds increase a bit, player numbers increase and even ratings increase for televised matches then that can be taken to the ARL as a reason for them to put more effort into WA and hopefully hold test matches there or hopefully a couple of world cup matches there.

The 2nd approach would be to get a specific team to make Perth their 2nd home. I read a report of manly always going to the sunshine coast in the off season and playing trials there (they went to Australia Zoo for media promotion). Same with Penrith going to darwin for trials. The idea being to create more fans that could support them and buy merchandise. And clubs choose where to play games not the NRL, so Gallop cant kybosh this idea.

How good would it be if South Sydney went there. Media exposure from the Crowe link. They go to tourist hotspots so there may be a link up with Perth tourism board. Play a trial there (helps to get people interested in the game of league) and also try to get one or two games with souths in it over to Members Equity each year. Hosting coaching clinics, going to schools, etc

Ground support would force Gallop to change his opinion, you cant turn your back on large numbers of fans screaming out for their own team. I remember posters for gold coasts bid for a franchise - "Wheres our team!" - On billboards around trial games and NRL games brought to Carrara. That was good promotion by them.

So thats a couple of ideas. Would love to hear other ideas. Crazy, bad or good.
