Again NZ could have just blown a chance to set themselves up for a win. No surprise, especially when the lower order starts at 5.

India will stil require a big 4th innings score (for this ground) to win...

But, the tail starts with the openers! Guptil might have got a few scores recently, but his dismissals have been disgraceful - schoolboy, amaterish and soft...

Flynn and Franklin are getting starts too, hopefully they are persevered with for a while.

The funny thing is that the batters are protected and it'll probably be Boult or Southee dropped next...

And Jeetan Patel? Someone has a sense of humour

It's going to be a tough chase on this deck.

I think for the sake of NZ's batting Ronchi needs to come in as soon as he qualifies. He's head and shoulders above Van Wyk or Watling with the bat, and gloves.

Nobody over here has even mentioned Ronchi... but I am still disappointed they went near Van Wyk tbh...

What we need most is those with talent - and I believe all of McCullum, Guptill, Williamson, Taylor, Flynn, Franklin and Ryder have more than enough talent to be good to world class (Taylor, Williamson) test bats to develop the discipline and mental toughness to succeed consistently at test level - in Chopper's parsimoninous terms, they need to "Harden the f**k up"

Guptil's issues are purely mental imo. Was reading some interesting stats on him how he averages over 40 when NZ bat first, but when they bat second he drops right down to around 20 and if NZ bat in the 3rd innings he's about 24.

For an opening batsman who in theory should have the hardest job opening the innings against the new ball in the best seam conditions he does remarkably well. My theory is that he allows the game situation to dictate how he plays far too much and lets that get into his headspace. The worst thing that can happen when Guptil is scoring reasonably freely is for someone to go out at the other end. Feels like the guy retreats into block mode no matter how bad the ball is and then gets himself out soon afterwards.

Flynn and Franklin I just don't rate at all, but don't know enough about the domestic scene to say who should be in there instead. Van Wyk, meh, but he's doing an OK job with bat and gloves at the moment.

There's nobody else... Brownlie next cab off the rank... Neil Broom has an impressive first class record still, I think, but they've bypassed him

Flynn's a hard wee bastard, but also seems to be stuck between being a nuggetty grafter, and a free flowing stroke-maker...

With more experience and perservence - with the likes of Guptill, McCullum, Williamson, Taylor, Flynn, Brownlie, (and perhaps Ryder) Southee, Boult, Bracewell we have the makings of a decent team

Ryder back in is important.

I think Ronchi will come in. He's just better with the bat in general than even the likes of Brownlie.

When does he qualify? November I think?

just found a story suggesting it's January...

Guess if he plays domestic cricket and goes well, he'll be a chance - much sooner have him than the wee Jaapie...

I think he had a knock for Wellington last roumd of the Plunket Shield and hit a ton off 90 odd.

I would like this explained... we are going with Watling as the number two keeper; so why is McCullum keeping right now?

I thought sub fielders were allowed to keep.

No, to keep you must be in the starting XI. It's like bowling.

I thought they couldn't, or did they change the rules?

If they can, the simple answer is, McCullum is the best keeper in NZ, bar none - shame he can't handle it full time any more

Should we really be suprised that Patel is doing a better job of bowling us to victory in the 4th than Vettori has managed in the past 15 years

If only the batsmen could bat.

We should I think, Patel is horrible imo - but that says a lot for how effective Vettori is in tests
