I'm not sure that possession has anything to do with the rule as it stands.

Yeah I am unsure on this actually. But it certainly has a bearing on the perception, which is why SJ didn't get penalised

The only occasion I recall seeing the word "accidental" in the rule book is "accidental off-side" ie the player found himself in front of a teammate with the ball "by accident". I don't recall it ever referring to what a player does himself.

I'm not sure how the rulebook reads, but in terms of accidentally/intentionally, when a player kicks it at you and it hits your hand, and you don't play at it its play on, is it not?

Correct. It's certainly not penalised as an intentional knock forward ;-)
