Probably ended up closer than it should have been. You couldn't see it on the TV with all the bodies in the way, but the short kick off was dropped cold by the Dragons and regathered before anybody noticed. It affected the scoreline - with the Dragons scoring on that set - but thankfully didn't affect the final result.

There were a lot of errors from the ref Garbs. He penalised a marker for tackling once, getting him mixed up with an offside player who was staying out of it.
And then there was that bizarre ruling from a touchie who claimed that Roberts had been taken out after the ball was out on the full. A try was scored soonafter.

I don't even look at these as being governing factors because imo, it evens out most of the time.

I'm sure we could watch in full an pick the refereeing to bits, but it would probably come up 50/50 in the end, and besides, it never changes the scoreline.

That ruling on Roberts was truely bizarre, your allowed to compete for the ball and thats all the Saints player was doing. Oh well at least the touchie was able to go home and tell his family he got his head on TV  .

It certainly was a stange one. I'll have to have another look but the Saints player barely brushed the Panthers player and the ball was well gone and out of contention anyway.
btw Jezza. Top notch live update. :D :thumn

Nobody can tell me that the call for the push on Roberts was not a crucial part of the game......

The fact of the matter is this.....Dragons get the ball rather than being on their own line facing another set of six!!!.

That was the worst most crucial call of the game. I truly believe had the touchy not come in we would not have been down 24-0, and it would have allowed us a chance to get some possesion. After that call and try the Panthers had all the possesion and momentum. While there were a number of dodgy calls during the game, I seriously believe we would not have had to have come back from a 24-0 defecit had that ludicrous decision been called.

Advantage of a home game no doubt....just gotta hope now there are not two upsets!

Unlucky last night guys. It was a great game of Rugby League.

Nothing to worry about for you Dragons fans, win or lose, I'm sure your boys would be running around next weekend anyway.

A great game. A gutsy win by the Panthers with so many players out injured.
The Dragons couldn't get away with such a slow start two games in a row.
The Dragons looked liked they where rusty after the bye.

Including the foward pass that led to your first try. Like willow said the calls tend to even out over the course of the game.

The penalty that resulted in the try had more bearing on the game I think.

Never-the-less you're right CP

My biggest concern after last night was Trent Barrett, specifically his pedestrian display in attack. His defence was fine, even brutal at times. But in attack he had next to NOTHING. 80% of his play involved running to the line, throwing a dummy, and getting smashed. Either that or he'd throw inside balls that even I could read, or second-man passes that NEVER fooled the Penrith defence - not the best defence in the league - one of the passes resulting in an intercept try.

I think Barrett had a case of the 'trying-to-hard' syndrome, which often results in high involvement levels, but high stress, predictability and loss of effectiveness.

I don't think his defence was good either, his shoulder is still giving him trouble and his hamstring also looks suspect.

I think he's running on one leg and defensively is going to be weak due to his left shoulder.

Never-the-less, I think that he needs to spark next week. Without him I honestly don't think we can win the competition, and his injury cloud just keeps getting bigger and blacker.

Unlucky with all the other results guys.
Personally, I don't think the Dragons deserve to be out of the competition just yet. I guess that's just the breaks you get though hey?

As us Sharks fans say, "there's always next year"!

Now... I've avoided posting so far because I figured it would just sound like sour grapes.

But damnit.... I am sour and I like grapes!

Does it really make any sense that by winning by a field goal Penrith earns a one week rest, straight into the Preliminary Finals and the Saints are out of the whole finals series?

It is quite absurd and a total indictment on the McIntyre system.

It was the most entertaining game I've watched all year.

That's Saints outfit is not far off a state of origin team, and I thought it was a great credit to Pernith to win the game, and great character from Saints to hang in there and come back the way they did.

Saints will be right in it next year again.

And probably scrape in 4th, before losing to the 5th places Cowboys/Tigers, and unfortunately be knocked out of the semi's, again, because Brisbane will lose to the Sharks and the Dogs, in 2nd position, will again drop their first match against the impressive Panthers outfit.
