Picking the No Show is a step backwards, we've moved on it would seem

Maxwell, now that he doesn't bowl much, is pretty much a similar type of player to SA's David Miller.

Miller had crappy numbers in 2015 and 2015/16. Failure and failure. But they stuck with him into 2016/17 when he did this in game 4.

http://www.espncricinfo.com/series/...d-odi-australia-tour-of-south-africa-2016-17/

He had failed in the 3 games previous.

It just isn't realistic to expect people to be as consistently good as ABDV at high SR. Like Viv in his era, ABDV is a one of a kind player. But they don't need to be to be regular match winners. But there needs to be some give and take, if you want a high SR middle order, you need to compensate and bat deeper, that is, play some bowlers who bat well (and or find some batsmen who bowl). That is what England and SA are doing so well. India too for that matter. 4 frontline bowlers without much batting SR and 2 batting allrounders is a bit WI era of the 4 quicks and some overs from Carl Hooper and Phil Simmons. And that approach coincided with them falling from the top to the bottom quick smart. Many teams make it work, tho.

Alternatively, play the 4 bowlers, and look to bowl opposition out like Pakistan do. But, they don't have much choice in the matter, 'cos their batting is woeful. The whole "its not the bowlers job to score runs" addage does not apply to higher risk higher SR limited overs cricket anymore even if some people want to firmly apply it to tests still. So SA play from Morris, Pretorious, Parnell and Phelukwayo with Tahir, Rabada and/or Morkel instead of Philander and Steyn (and Abbott previously).

Deeply dissapointing that there is doubt that we will win any of the odi’s. I think 5-0 is on the cards.

According to WWOS on Bookface, the Toyman has been called up for Fatty Finch who did a fetlock.

Not expected to play, Head to open apparently.
