Yep, everyone who is in the running for the first test has to play at least one shield game according to Boof, I really like the way he thinks. Wonder if that applies to Haze

Cummins has to play in this game.

Looks like Josh and Notch might be the only two not playing Shield before the 1st test. Fair enough too

It’s understood prime Test candidate Josh Hazlewood will be rested from the Blues’ four-day game against South Australia at the SCG starting on November 25, given he’s bowling strongly in the ODIs against South Africa which conclude on Sunday.

Mitchell Johnson is currently being rested from the final three one-dayers and that break may include sitting out the next Western Australia Sheffield Shield game

Lehmann says the vast majority of his squad – mainly batsmen and spinners - will get a final game of red-ball cricket under their belts to maximise preparation before the Tests.

“Most will play,” said Lehmann.

Question:

Are South Africa throwing everything at us in these 5 ODIs with their best side? Is there anyone not in their XI that automatically should be in there?

We are resting blokes and picking blokes who shouldn't and wont be there come WC (Richardson, Wade etc..) plus have injuries to others

I dunno looks like we are the ones experimenting a bit and not playing our best ODI side (Johnson Cummins rested, Harris playing shield, Haddin, Clarke injured etc...)

South Africa should really be winning this series (and they still may do) but gee, if they are favourites for the world cup, then we got nothing to worry about

I think a bit of both, resting and rotating.

However looking at someone for one ODI game, like NCN and no doubt Richardson, is not really having a good look

I don't think Smith was rested in the first game as Clarkey said he was omitted just as I dont believe the Toyman was rested last night as X is a better spin bowling prospect and we can do without his usual brain snaps and throwing his wicket away every game.

I dont think we know what our best XI is just yet.

Maybe we don't want to show SA everything just yet?, though it appears they are selecting their best XI for each game (asterix on Tahir)

Duminy to come back in. Apart from hashishpipe, ABDV and Faf their batting looks pretty meh. Their 3 best bowlers are excellent but after that it's another meh.

I really think O'Keefe should be getting a run. I think he is the best limited overs spinner in the country. He can also handle the bat which is big in ODIs.

At the moment we have competition for spots which is what you want.

Personally I think Maxwell should be on the outer. I would like both Marsh and Faulkner in the side but is there room?

For there to be room Wade would have to bat in the top 5. That would leave Watson, Smith, Clarke and Bailey fighting over 2 spots. Or you could open with Watto or Wade but Finch and Warner are dynamic and are beginning to form a good partnership.

Duminy should be in the South African side but that's about it I think but other than that I think they are full strength.

Our biggest problem is we have no more one day cricket prior to the WC squad being announced so we need to have a look at a few players in this series to confirm who we want in the squad. If the domestic one day comp was still going, I doubt we would have as much rotation as we are at the moment. Notch would probably be rested for the tests but that is about it

yes so one player Duminy, so they are basically playing their best side (nothing wrong with that)

After the next 2 ODIs v Aust, they also don't play any more ODIs before they announce the squad for the WC, they actually play a 3 test series v WI, then play them in 3 t20s, then 5 ODIs. (The ODIs start 16th Jan)

Just tells you the different thought process and planning from both sides in this 5 ODI series.

You might want to check O'Keefe's 50 over stats. It isn't that pretty. Not really a limited overs spinner which is a surprise but I guess his consistency is actually his downfall as batsman just wait for the length and dispatch it to and over the boundary. If we wern't a month from a world cup I would try Boyce or Zampa.

We are hardly at full strength as well, I mean we had Richardson bowling pies. Harris will be in the side at the WC.

I will be surprised if Harris plays in the WC. Will have been 2 years since he had played an ODI and 1 and a half since he had played a domestic 50 over match. He has a great record in the matches he has played but I think we need to use players that have played more one day cricket. Plus there is also the big risk of his knees playing up and we are suddenly a man down in the sqaud

I won't be surprised one single bit. He is still our best ODI bowler period, look at his stats. If he wants to play, he plays. I believe he has earnt the right to have a home WC.

yet SOK has played for Australia in T/20s and Test matches and according to you he is crap at ODIs because of some stats

Seriously, you take way too much notice of stats without analysing them properly

If we are demanding SOK be in the test side cause statistically he is (by far and away) our best domestic spinner, then we need to understand what his domestic 50 over games brings. At this stage it isn't much.

Id rather we pick SOK for tests, he has earnt the right to play a few test series to establish himself. He is turning 30 next month, and would like him soley to concentrate on test cricket for the next 3-4 years (and be way more successful than a Hauritz or a Lyon)

Unfortunately Xavier is our best (of an average lot) bet spinner for the WC, and should only play on decks and conditions where we look to bowl him out for 10 overs.

Doherty is the worst spinner I've ever seen play for Australia, and that includes Beer & McGain.

12 wickets in his last 15 ODI's.
