The New Zealand team has been beaten in the opening round of the Dubai sevens - but they still progress through
New Zealand has lost 10-7 to Samoa at the opening round of the IRB Sevens Series in Dubai.

New Zealand faces Canada tonight in the quarter finals at the Dubai Sevens. After an opening day of upsets New Zealand will be wary of Canada but should still be good enough to reach the semi finals.
Fiji is a likely last four opponent should they overcome the unpredictable French. South Africa versus Samoa is the pick of the quarter finals - the South Africans have been the form side of the tournament but have struggled against Samoa in the past.
Defending champions England are thought to be be too powerful for Australia in the last quarter-final.

It looks like SA has the wood on everyone this year.

Good to see a couple of upsets in pool play as well.

New Zealand is eyeing another semi final with Fiji at the rugby sevens in George.
New Zealand is eyeing another semi final showdown with Fiji at the South African rugby sevens in George. Gordon Tietjens side must first get past France in the quarter finals while Fiji meet Wales.
Tietjens says day two is where everything counts. He says the standard picks up when it comes to finals time and warns against writing off Fiji or New Zealand, as whatever way it will be a tough match.
The New Zealanders beat Australia, Tunisia and Wales in pool play. South Africa meets Tunisia and England plays Samoa in the other quarter finals

It was good to see Tunisia beat Aus and knock them out of the Semis for the cup. The same can be siad for Wales who drew with Eng in pool play and knocked Arg out of the semis for the cup as well. Maybe there is some depth coming through in the comp.

Gordon Tietjens is hoping the confidence gained from the win in South Africa comes through in Wellington
New Zealand Sevens coach Gordon Tietjens is delighted to have his captain back to lead the side at this weekend's NZI Sevens tournament in Wellington.
Tietjens says having Tafai Ioasa back gives them a lot more depth because on his day he is one of the best sevens players in the world.
Tietjens has rewarded the players that have taken New Zealand to the top of the IRB Sevens series, and he says a lot of players have grown since the runner up finish in Dubai and then victory in George.
Tietjens says the tournament win in South Africa brought a lot of confidence, with players like Nick Thomson and Afeleke Pelenise having big tournaments.
Tietjens is looking for his players to combine as well as they have in the first two events, and if they can lift another couple of notches they could have a big tournament.
Canterbury winger Steven Yates is the only new cap in the 12-man New Zealand squad.
New Zealand has Argentina, Kenya and Tonga in their pool.
New Zealand and South Africa are joint top of the table with 36 points each
The tournament starts on Friday.
