Kate Beckinsale played a sexy, leather-clad vampire in "Underworld" - and then a vampire hunter in "Van Helsing" - so, what with her uber-sexualized image and great looks, it's sometimes easy to forget the British beauty is an Oxford-educated mother of one, intent of doing more with her career than bringing mythological monsters to life. And indeed, Kate seems determined to allow her softer, non-blood sucking side to take over for a while, as her latest indie project - the small-town drama "Snow Angels" - has just been released on March 7th. However, Kate managed to get herself in the spotlight for an entirely different reason - whether intentional or not - when she recently told an interviewer that she'd rather eat vagina than sushi. In another interview, she was given the chance to explain herself and her not-altogether-wise comment.
When in need of a good old-fashioned controversy - complete with public outrage, magazine coverage and other, more humorous consequences - it always helps to mention your own vagina - or any other woman's, for that matter. It will instantly start people wondering about your morality, sexuality and intelligence - and it will definitely give the public something spicy to chew on while contemplating your next movie and bathing you in renewed attention. Kate hit all the previously mentioned marks when she carelessly pointed out in a recent interview that she dislikes sushi (a boring remark in itself), to the point where she'd much rather perform cunnilingus on another woman. In the controversy that ensued, Kate sat down for another interview with The Film Forum for AOL and tried to get things straight. NO pun intended.
When asked to detail her controversy-sparking comment about vagina and sushi, Kate stated that "sushi freaks me out more than almost anything. At least a vagina would be warm. [laughs] My publicist has literally turned a funny color and is going to go have a lie-down. He's throwing up now, as well", she added. Predictably, she made it sound like saying outrageous things is simply part of her personal charm - and could never possibly be used as a tool for publicity stunts. "I find a lot of things kind of funny and I often say what's on my mind, and then get nine texts from all my friends going, "What's the matter with you?" But I haven't ever made a big attempt to have any particular image. And I don't really worry about it", she revealed. It will be interesting to monitor the kind of media attention Kate will get over the coming weeks - and then talk about how much it pays to pretend to simply have a big mouth.
