Forgot to mention something :D

I coach a junior team. Had them for a number of seasons. Under 16's this season.

I told one of them off tonight.

Dare say he won't rock up to training next week with a Chelsea shirt on!

Hoyte and Clichy face fitness tests for Carling Cup Final
Chelsea v Arsenal
Carling Cup Round F
Millennium Stadium
Sun, Feb 25, 2007, 3pm
By Richard Clarke

Arsène Wenger has question marks over his two full backs ahead of Sunday’s Carling Cup Final against Chelsea.

As expected the Arsenal manger has ruled out a number of major stars from the game because they did not participate in the earlier rounds.

Justin Hoyte (hamstring) and Gael Clichy (foot) were in line to start but both are struggling with injury. They face fitness tests on Friday. Armand Traore is on stand-by if his fellow Frenchman fails to make it however Hoyte’s possible absence would cause a re-shuffle as Emmanuel Eboue (ankle) is also injured.

"Ljungberg, Gallas, Henry and Lehmann won't play,” confirmed Wenger at Thursday’s pre-match press conference. “Eboue is out. He is set to join in [training] tomorrow so I don't think I will involve him on Sunday.

“Clichy looks like he will be out as well. It's inflammation on his foot after he got a knock and he can't kick the ball. He has a scan and we’ll see tomorrow. Traore plays if he doesn't.

“Justin Hoyte will have a fitness test too because he has been out.”
I would have thought Traore would have started anyway... He's been there all the way.

I'd like to see something like this -

Almunia
Flamini / Toure / Gilberto / Traore
Walcott / Diaby / Denilson / Rosicky
Aliadiere / Baptista

Bench - Hleb, Fabregas, Senderos, Adebayor, Poom, Djourou

Changes would be -
Djourou at RB and Flamini in the middle somewhere
Djourou or Sendo at CB and Gilberto on the bench or in the middle

Pretty sure Traore, Toure, Aliadiere, Baptista, Walcott, Diaby and Denilson will start.

Henry playing through the pain barrier

Arsenal could be facing the most crucial part of their season without talismanic captain Thierry Henry.

The French striker has been suffering from a ligament injury in his foot for over a fortnight and looked out of sorts in the Gunners' 1-0 loss away at PSV in the Champions League on Tuesday.

'I've been playing with a bad foot for two weeks now,' he was reported as saying in the Guardian.

'I like to go out there even if I'm not 100% fit,' he added. 'It is affecting me but I want to help the team.'

Having sustainted the blow in Arsenal's draw with Middlesbrough on February 3, Henry has suffered inflammation in the area for his past three appearances, although he won't be risked in the Carling Cup final on Sunday as manager Arsene Wenger continues to blood his young stars.

However, the news of Henry's injury will frustrate Wenger as current top scorer Robin van Persie's broken metatarsal means they already stretched in attack.

With Theo Walcott out of form, Emmanuel Adebayor and Brazilian Julio Baptista will have to shoulder the burden of leading Arsenal's line.

Henry, who had a long spell on the sidelines at the end of last year with a back and neck problem, will be keen to avoid any further spells on the touchline with big FA Cup and Champions League commitments coming up.

The Gunners have already had to cope without the striker this season and he has a history of injuries around his Achilles tendon, which have dogged his past few campaigns.

With Blackburn in the FA Cup next Wednesday, as well as the return leg of the Champions League against PSV the following week, Henry's absence may prove crucial; although there are those who will argue that after the team's lacklustre performance in midweek, they may be better waiting until he is fully fit.
I thought it really showed against Blackburn that something wasn't right. Damn shame Van P is injured or he'd be starting with Big Ad. Would be good to see Bap transfer the CC form to other comps as well. And I wouldn't mind seeing Theo in a more advanced roll either...

There's a thought... Play Aliadiere on the right and put Theo up with the Beast against Chelsea... That would be interesting. Aliadiere has put in a couple of good performances when playing a bit of time back there. It would be a nightmare chasing young Theo about all game for their centre backs...

We've finally got most back on the park. Basically only Eboue, Van Persie and Hoyte right now. Eboue and Hoyte only minor. A few weeks ago we had 8 or 9 out.

If Van P was fit, it wouldn't bother me too much about TH not being 100%. We've shown we can play without him. We lost once in 8 games when he was out earlier in the season. I still maintain this side is being built around the likes oc Cesc and it's important he stays on the park.

There's also a school of thought that we look for TH to much when he is on the park. You can see the difference with players running off the ball when he is out there as opposed to when he isn't. If's he's not 100% I'd prefer him to not be out there. At 100% he's one of the first guys put on the team sheet.

Match Preview
Carling Cup Final
Millennium Stadium
Sunday, February 25, 2007, 3pm
By Richard Clarke

The Carling Cup Final on Sunday will be Arsène Wenger’s most prestigious talent show ever.

For many years, the Arsenal manager has used this particular competition as his fame academy; a chance to blood unknown and untested players in a first-team environment.

In the build-up to this game the Frenchman suggested this season’s run to Cardiff was a footballing version of the X-Factor talent show. But can his fledglings really out-perform a Chelsea side with an unrivalled £-factor of their own? Jose Mourinho certainly has no intention of sending out a weakened side after all.

Sunday will see the two managers, the two teams even the two clubs singing from entirely different songsheets. But Wenger has always been happy to whistle his own tune in this tournament.

"You have singers in England going on the X-Factor show for their talents to be discovered,” said Wenger. “If they don't organise it, you don't find them.

"I like it because people are brave enough to come out and say they want to achieve something in their life. They are ready to be committed to do it. They have a target.

"I like people who turn up and are ready to fight for something, like our young players are. And this competition is the X-Factor Academy for us.

“People say never judge a team on a cup run because it depends who you play. But in this competition we have played Everton, Liverpool and Tottenham so it would be a great reward for us to win it.

“Liverpool was a tough test, Everton was a tough test and no-one can ever predict how difficult it will be against Chelsea.

"Their game is based on experience and power, ours will be based on mobility and movement. It will be very important for us to try and stop them in decisive moments in the game by taking over that physical power."

Wenger will keep faith with the side that has taken him to Cardiff. William Gallas, Thierry Henry and Freddie Ljungberg are omitted. Jens Lehmann (suspended) and Robin van Persie (foot) would not have played either as they had not featured in the earlier rounds of the competition.

Emmanuel Eboue (foot) is likely to be out while Justin Hoyte (hamstring) and Gael Clichy (foot) were due for tests on Friday. Armand Traore will step in at left back should his fellow Frenchman not make it.

Along with Denilson, the 17-year-old defender is the discovery of this year’s run. Cesc Fabregas, Van Persie and Clichy — now first-team regulars - are among the previous recipients of this imaginary award. Top-flight starts are the point of this competition for Wenger but that does not mean Sunday’s trophy will be simply handed over to the more experienced side.

“I'm very proud of what these players have achieved this season,” he said. “We have not just won we've won with style which is our philosophy.

"But for me the biggest achievement is always the next one. What you have done in your life is not important. If you think what you have won is not as important as the next one then you are finished.

"I want to achieve what is front of me as well as I can and I really want to win this trophy on Sunday.

"It will be an unusual achievement if we do it.”

And an highly uplifting one too.

Aliadiere - I worried I wasn't good enough
By Adam Clark

Jeremie Aliadiere believes this year’s Carling Cup run could save his Arsenal career.

With first-team chances limited, the 23-year-old forward thought his eight-year spell at the Club was on the verge of ending.

Then came a chance in Carling Cup Third Round at West Bromwich Albion and he took it, bagging both goals in a 2-0 win.

Since then he has started every round - scoring two more goals - and been handed further chances in the Premiership and Champions League.

Yet incredibly the Frenchman — who is the second longest serving player on the books at Emirates - admitted that as recently as December he doubted he was good enough to cut it at Arsenal.

“I didn't think I could do too much more,” he said. “I always did my best and I had injuries and problems which didn't help me. But I thought maybe I was not good enough for Arsenal.

“I thought about leaving in December. But then I started playing, scoring goals and I changed my mind.”

“It's nice to know the manager has got faith in you and has been waiting as long as I have been waiting.”

Aliadiere confessed he has wondered in the past how his career may have differed had he stayed in France or moved elsewhere. Now he says he has no regrets about his move to England but stressed he is not looking too far into the future.

"The more games I play the better and I want to play more and more,” he said. “Not only Carling Cup and FA Cup; I would like to play in the Champions League and Premiership.

“I did think about how it would have been if I stayed in France and if I went somewhere else. But you can't really regret it. I have got no regrets that I came here.”

“I am just thinking about now and until the end of the season. Then I will think about my future in June.”
The lad will score tonight.

Denilson - Carling Cup is like a kickabout
By Richard Clarke

Denilson has vowed to treat the Carling Cup Final like a kick-about on the backstreets of Brazil.

The 19-year-old midfielder, signed from Sao Paulo on transfer deadline in August, has been a revelation in this season’s competition. The West Brom and Everton games served as his apprenticeship, he then went on to put in professional performances against Liverpool and Tottenham in the latter rounds.

It should be no surprise, Denilson is a mature individual. He played for Sao Paulo in the Inter-Continental Cup at the age of 16 and has been the Brazil Under-19s captain for the past year. That experience is helping him take Sunday’s game in his confident stride.

“I am hoping to finish off this wonderful season on a gold standard in the Carling Cup and also the FA Cup and the Champions League,” he said. “Why not?

“I don't feel any pressure at all. I am playing as though it is a kick-about in the street.

“I have already played before 80,000 a few times including against Liverpool when I came on as a substitute in the Inter-Continental Cup.”

Denilson is no relation to the player of the same name who moved from Sao Paulo to Real Betis for a then world record fee of £22 million in 1998. This Denilson is the son of a jobbing Brazilian professional and grew up with Zinedine Zidane as his hero. Like any overseas player he has needed an adaptation period. On the pitch it has been surprisingly short, off the pitch it is still ongoing.

“One thing that is very different here in England is that football is a lot faster than Brazil,” he said. “But I like that. You can get a battering but you have to have the body to withstand that and although I am small I am very fit.

“The biggest issue for me has been to learn English, but I am getting there. I live here on my own, not with a family. But that is OK for me. I can follow English television and listen to American music. I can't cook but I don't drink. I respect what other individual people want to do but it is not for me.

“Gilberto has been very helpful to me while I have been here. He does not tell me what to do but he suggests good things and when we have a day off we go to places of interest like Madame Tussauds.

“I like it there. I have never met Pele but he is there in wax. It is one of the places I will go if we win on Sunday.

Then he corrected himself: “After we win on Sunday.”
I'm looking forward to watching this guy in coming seasons. Much like when Fab4 came along.

Gilberto - I've been a father figure to Denilson
By Adam Clark

Gilberto has been both a 'father figure' and team-mate to Denilson this season.

The Brazilian midfielder has done everything possible to help his younger compatriot settle at Arsenal and has been impressed by the return he's seen on the pitch.

Denilson, 19, only arrived from Sao Paulo in August but has been one of the stars of this season's Carling Cup run.

This is despite not yet having mastered the English language, a situation Gilberto remembers all too well.

"I just make sure he is happy at the Club and that he does not feel scared of his new life," said Gilberto. "It's difficult not speaking the language in a new country. That's very, very hard. I'm trying to do with Denilson what Edu did with me.

"I'm telling him everything I can about things at the Club, about London and about the Premiership. But he has settled in so very well - and very quickly too."

"It would be the same for any English player who went to Brazil. Until they learnt the language they would find it very hard. Denilson is trying very hard, he talks to other players and that's nice to see."

Gilberto remembers first hearing of Denilson's talents while away on international duty. The Arsenal vice-captain heard rave reviews and is delighted to see how quickly the youngster has become an asset to Arsène Wenger's first-team.

"The first time I heard about him was from the physio of the Brazil team," said Gilberto. "He told me Arsenal might be interested in him [Denilson]. Everybody told me good things about the player and he has confirmed everything that I heard.

"He is just one of many very good young players here, which is nice to know.

"The others in the squad are young but they have already shown fantastic footballing ability and fantastic character," he added.

"When you are that age you can sometimes be scared to play with name players. I know I was scared when I was 18 and 19 and playing in the first team. But they have taken their chance.

"It is amazing how quickly. And I am very happy about that. They are quality. Sometimes it needs games to get confidence and the Carling Cup has given them fantastic experience.

"There's been big pressure on them but they handle it very well. The future of Arsenal looks bright."
Well done Dad.

Still would like to see Gilberto have the arm band and let TH go about his business.

Baptista - Cup run shows I can do the business
By Richard Clarke

Julio Baptista believes that the Carling Cup could be the making of his Arsenal career.

The burly midfielder-cum-striker is on loan from Real Madrid this season and hoping to impress Arsene Wenger enough to gain a permanent deal at the end of the season.

With six goals in two games, the Carling Cup appears to be the tournament he has chosen to stake his claim.

“This is the competition I'm having most opportunity,” said the 25-year-old Brazilian. “It's the one in which Arsene Wenger is really giving me a chance, the only one where I've been able to show how I am able to play.

“It has been very important to me, as much as anything for my own self-confidence. It shows that when I'm needed I can do the business.

“I think I've definitely shown what I'm capable of and now it's the decision of the Club [over whether to keep me or not].”

Baptista goes by the nickname of “The Beast” but he was also called “Batigoal” during his free-scoring spell at Sevilla. However, although the match ball from the 6-3 win at Anfield is sitting on his mantelpiece, his four-goal performance that night was one of the few in which he has started up front. He has flitted between roles as an attacking midfielder and supporting forward.

“My favourite position is as second striker,” he said, “but a free-roaming one, ideally about five metres behind the striker.

“Arsene knows that's my best position but sometimes the situation arises that I am needed in other positions and I'll play there. But really the one I want to play in, and know I'm best at, is the second striker role.

“Of course it has been frustrating not to play more but you're competing with international players in every other position.

“When I arrived the team was pretty much formed already, everyone had their positions. But of course I want to be playing in the main team.”

Sunday is Baptista’s chance to bridge that divide.
I don't think it's D-Day for the Beast, but he needs a big game tonight.

Walcott - My days as a Chelsea ballboy
By Richard Clarke

Theo Walcott has gone from Chelsea ballboy to Arsenal poster boy in the space of six short years.

The 17-year-old winger is set to play the biggest match of his burgeoning career on Sunday when the two teams contest the Carling Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff. And Jose Mourinho’s side are intent on biting the hands that used to feed them - footballs that is.

Walcott might have been playing for Chelsea on Sunday. Even before he had reached his teenage years they had spotted his talent and invited him to Stamford Bridge to help out.

“Yeah I was 10 going on 11 when I was a ballboy there,” he said. “There was always a chance I could have gone to Chelsea.

“I was playing in Jersey and their scouts were there. They invited me to come down for the Liverpool match because I was a Liverpool fan.

“I remember Liverpool lost 2-0 and I didn’t get a touch of the ball but at least I got to watch it. And I met some of the players - Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen - afterwards in the dressing room. It’s funny because when I went to the World Cup I showed Michael a picture of it.

“But I was more interested in the Academy then to be honest. At a young age you just want to play football. It was always going to be Southampton.”

Walcott’s selection in Germany only added to the hype that has surrounded him ever since he signed for Arsenal last January. The player himself accepts the past year has not been a smooth ride but opportunity has knocked loudest in the Carling Cup.

“I just think we’ve got better every round,” he said. “To go away to Tottenham and get that result was brilliant, I thought. It’s not an easy place to go to I’ll tell you that now. I thought Portsmouth was bad but we showed character at 2-0 down with all the fans against us. I thought our supporters were brilliant, Julio’s two goals were brilliant and the whole squad were brilliant.

“But overall it has been hard because you just want to play. I’m only 17 and playing in the first team at Arsenal, probably the best club in the world I’d say. So I’ve got a long way to go yet.

“Still to be here in my first year and be in a cup final so early, I didn’t expect that. It is a dream come true.”
Be good to see Theo find some form too...

Traore will seek out words of wisdom in Cardiff
By Chris Harris

Armand Traore will seek plenty of advice if he gets the nod for Sunday's Carling Cup Final.

The French left back will start against Chelsea if his compatriot Gael Clichy fails to shrug off a foot injury. Traore will look to his team-mates and coaches for words of wisdom ahead of the biggest game of his fledgling career.

"Yes, I will definitely ask Gael for advice, and Kolo Toure as well and Pat Rice and Steve Bould," Traore told Arsenal TV Online.

"Steve Bould has played a big part in my progress. He's a top-class defender and he really helped me when I came to Arsenal because before that I couldn't defend that well. I have improved because of him.

"My concentration has improved a lot, it has to when you play at this level. And my defending is better too."

Traore has featured in every game during Arsenal's run to the Carling Cup Final. He admits that nerves will still be a factor at the Millennium Stadium - but only until the first whistle.

"I get nervous before the game but when the referee blows the whistle I don't think about it any more. Once I am on the pitch I can relax and play my game."

Subscribers can now hear the full audio interview with Armand. In it he talks about: the support of his family in Cardiff, his surprise at playing a Final so early in his career, fixture congestion, his big-match preparation and his highlight of the Carling Cup run.
He deserves a start tonight.

Toure - Our strength in adversity is the key
By Chris Harris

Kolo Toure believes the rollercoaster ride of Arsenal's Carling Cup Semi-Final will hold the young Gunners in good stead when they face Chelsea in Cardiff on Sunday.

Arsène Wenger's inexperienced team found themselves two goals adrift in the first half of the first leg at Tottenham but battled back to earn a draw. Then they found another gear when Spurs forced extra time in the return leg at Emirates Stadium.

Toure led by example throughout those North London encounters and admits that his team-mates' strength in adversity over both matches convinced him that the 'Young Guns' could go on to lift the trophy at the Millennium Stadium.

"I knew we could do it when we played against Tottenham and the game went to extra time," said Toure.

"We knew it would be really, really difficult but I saw Denilson play some great football, he was fighting for every ball and although I expected him to be tired he was really fit and doing his best. The whole team was fantastic.

"The character they showed at White Hart Lane proved they won't be intimidated on Sunday. Tottenham played a great game and we felt under pressure but we had a great response. Julio [Baptista] scored a fantastic goal and we finished the game strongly.

"As one of the senior players I didn't know if the young players would be tired or not but they weren't. They were focused and did a great job.

"They are really ready. You see them in training and they are focused. When they played Tottenham it was a tense game, very difficult, but players like Denilson and Abou Diaby were absolutely fantastic.

"The young guys have amazed me this season. They are improving and they listen to the senior players. They have proved themselves."
Needs a big game for us tonight if we're a chance of the upset.
