Getting a new laptop in the next week or so, as soon as I pull my finger out and decide which one :D

How do you geeks know how to build or write it from scratch :fist:

Old desktop had something like 512MB Ram, new one has 5gb, new has 13 times the processing power with dual core or some sh*t. Am I saying that right?

In the past, I've had problems with buying HP PC's that don't actually have enough Ram to run the Op system effectively. My Mother picked up a HP PC that had XP pre-installed but only 512k Ram. Everyone knows you need at least 1Gig to run XP effectively, except my Mother and HP it seems.

My Mum is so frustrating though. When she wants something she just goes out and buys it. She went off and bought that PC knowing nothing about them. Didn't ask me or anyone else. Just rocked up to Harvey Norman, spent a motza and got a sh*t PC. Then I had to go and fix the damn thing up!!

My eyes glazed over at "Harvey Norman"..

annoys the hell out of me.

They are the professionals, you'd think they'd put some thought into making machines that are well put together and have components in them that work seamlessly with each other.

Mine too....

No matter how many times I tell her that if she wants to buy anything like that, she should call me first. Sometimes she just gets the idea she needs something new and she lets some snake oil salesman talk her into buying the first bit of garbage they can't sell to anyone else.

You know that old desktop you're about to get rid of? Before you trash it, pull it apart and see if you can put it back together. If you can put it back together, switch it on and it works, then you know how to build a computer. Its that easy.

If you don't get it back together, then jump on the net and see if you can work out where you went wrong. At the end of the day, if you're a complete nub and can't get the thing to work, well you were just going to bin it anyway. Thats pretty much how I learnt most of what I know. I just practised on stuff that was destined for the bin anyway.

If you get it back together and working then lesson two would be to get some instruction's off the net on how to wipe the hard drive clean and install the op system again. Everything is on the net, you just need to look.

We did that with a computer at school that was otherwise going off the roof. With the help of one person who actually knew what they were doing we each effectively put it back together, we couldn't see if it worked again unfortunately but it was a good exercise. That part goes there, that part does that...

Not sure if parents would be too keen on re-writing OP systems though.

If its getting replaced then who cares.

I learnt everything about building computers from google searches pretty much. Made one in 2008 that was a dual boot system with xp and ubuntu. Never used ubuntu sold just got vista, so that to my brother though, and now I have an iMac that I have a windows xp partition on as well (for games). I'm pretty much a mac convert now though so probably wont be building anything for a while

Does the poor bastard know what he's putting himself in for?

I mean, he'll probably get laid tonight, but then after that it surely all goes down hill...

:D

Just stirring. Hope it all goes well.
