It's not going to happen given the current weather in Wellington, but how funny would it be if all of a sudden a few dark clouds hovered around and it started raining, the match couldn't continue and finished as a no-result (as a minimum 20 overs is required for a result in ODIs via Duckworth-Lewis, and NZ only have faced 9 overs) with NZ 12 runs short of victory?

Pakistan won the '92 World Cup. However, a match in their run to World Cup glory that not many people talk about was when they played England at Adelaide Oval:

http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/65130.html

Pakistan were skittled for 74, and England were 1/24 off 8 overs before the match was washed out, hence both teams got a point. In the end, that point edged Australia out of 4th spot and subequently, a semi-final spot.

Many people talk about NZ's final group game vs Pakistan and say that NZ deliberately threw their last pool game against Pakistan to allow Pakistan in the semi-finals so they would get a home-final in Auckland against them instead of having to play Australia in Sydney (which is what would've happened, because that was the compromise in exchange for hosting their match vs Australia in Auckland instead of in Australia). However, that would've been irrelevant if the England vs Pakistan match wasn't washed out and England won and putting a huge dent in Pakistan's net run rate, as even if NZ intentionally threw that game vs Pakistan, Australia finished on a superior net run-rate to Pakistan and both teams would've ended up on equal pts with Australia having the better net run rate and getting 4th position. England bowled superbly that day and were on target for a crushing win, but in the context of that tournament, Pakistan - irrespective of the star players they had - got lucky when it mattered the most.

well done to Tim Southee. 9th bowler in ODI history to take 7 or more wickets in an ODI, 3rd bowler to take 7 wickets in a World Cup, 1st bowler to take 7 wickets for NZ, and 6th best bowling figures in ODI history.

Almost appropriate that's the way the game ends.

Looking forward to see how England stack up against fellow minnows Bangladesh, Scotland and Afghanistan

Gotta love all the aussie bookies giving it to the Poms.

How bad are England? I mean, taking nothing away from NZ, how is it that a nation that made it to number one in the world on the back of their swing bowlers can go so thoroughly to shit when faced by a good swing bowler? And who will they blame this time?

I was in New Zealand (on holidays) at the time this match was played. Does anyone else remember this?:

http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/65641.html

This match reminded me a lot of today's. England were skittled for 117 before the tea-break, Gilchrist and Hayden went beserk with the bat and finished it off about 30 mins after the tea-break (which was something back then, as this was before T20 cricket and to win a match scoring at nearly 10 an over back was unheard of. 90 of Australia's 118 were from boundaries and a 6). I remember the sell-out crowd at the SCG was moreso stunned rather than excited at what had happened after the winning runs were hit. The next match a couple of days later at the MCG was a thriller, with Brett Lee's bowling under pressure in the final over getting us over the line.

I was at that game. Was in the bar at the Clovelly Hotel before the sun went down.
