Eels eye top four
12Dec06
JARRYD Hayne is tipped to move from the wing to fullback before too long but new Parramatta Eels coach Michael Hagan believes the boom teenager could also play in the centres.
He revealed that when he was guest speaker at Parramatta Leagues Club's recent annual breakfast to help Parramatta Mission feed the less fortunate at Christmas.
While Hayne has made no secret of his desire to ultimately play fullback, Hagan said the NRL Rookie of the Year ``needs to find his feet a bit in first grade, if that means being on the wing for a little while''.
``But ultimately, he looks like a real footballer to me . . . maybe fullback or centre down the track,'' Hagan said.
`I think he's got some real instincts for the game.''
On Hayne not getting any game time with the Kangaroos in the Tri-Nations series, Hagan would have liked to have seen him given a run in the preliminary matches.
``It's disappointing if you're part of a 23-man squad and they play three or four games and you can't get a look in,'' he said.
``I guess it'd be great experience for him. He's only a 19-year-old and he had a wonderful season with Parramatta.
``I'm sure he'll be a better player because of the experience of being with [coach] Ricky Stuart and the Australian team.''
Hagan was interviewed by the club's corporate sales and marketing manager - and former premiership-winning captain - Steve Edge, whose trademark repartee was matched by Hagan's self-deprecating sense of humour.
Asked about the Eels' chances of making the top four next season, Hagan replied: ``I think that's a realistic goal, Edgey - for your marketing purposes.''
He stressed it would come down to ``keeping your best players on the park''.
Edge also brought up the most anticipated aspect of the Eels' 2007 line-up the halves combination of Tim Smith and new signing Brett Finch.
Hagan said Smith's huge potential was evident before his difficult second season but added: ``I think he'll be a fine player.'' He noted that Finch had played 160 NRL games and was only in his mid-20s, as well as having played State of Origin.
``I think they'll work well together and I think they'll lead the team around the park pretty well,'' he said.

New colour to Eels' livery

THE Parramatta Eels' decision to introduce a third jersey in white was ``a design thing more than anything'', according to chief executive Denis Fitzgerald.
He said the gold jersey would remain the club's primary playing strip. He wasn't aware yet of any matches in which
it was planned to wear the white jersey.
``It was a suggestion from our jersey manufacturer to make them look rather unique and also to have available a bit more contrast than other club jerseys that may have similar colours,'' Fitzgerald said.
Under the previous design that was in place for three years, the blue jersey was used infrequently, especially after a sequence of losses in it.

1) Dennis is basically saying that he can't see us wearing the white jersey too often.(Great news!)
2) Even the club think the blue jerseys are jinxed !
