NORTH Sydney Bears under-18 league star Hugh Tomkins will take on American Samoa in an international gridiron match.
Hugh, 17 - captain of the NSW and Sydney University gridiron team - also plays for the Bears S.G. Ball team, a stepping stone to Toyota Cup and the NRL.
Australias 50-member gridiron squad will tour American Samoa from December 27 to January 6. Hugh is a linebacker, a defensive position.
Theyll be a lot bigger than us but nothing we cant handle, he said. Weve got a good coach and have been training hard - were looking forward to the challenge.
Hugh, a Marist College North Shore year 11 student and house captain this year, trains about 15 hours a week, with gym, fitness drills and swimming for recovery.
He began playing rugby union at 11 for Gordon Juniors and took up league at school, at 13.
He has played in a Metropolitan Catholic Colleges rep league team and this year won Bears S.G. Ball selection.
S.G. Ball gives us a good insight into the under-20s and we can get scouted from there, he said. It would be awesome to play league for a NSW club but Im hoping to study physio so well see how it goes.
