I'm gonna follow Ben Ikin's conspiracy theory here...

What are the chances that Ryan Hoffman mysteriously gets injured after the Titans game on Saturday??

Greg Bird's 2nd and final game of his suspension will be over after that Titans game. So technically if someone were to get injured after that game.... Bird should be eligible.

I originally thought Ryan Hoffman was a strange decision... They had younger in form more promising options available... Ie Josh Jackson...

But to me it now makes perfect sense... It would have been cruel to call in a kid like Jackson only to ask him to pull a sickie for Bird...

So they call in a veteran... Who has the bye this weekend so he wont miss any club games...

Where's Tooves?? There's gotta be an investigation in to this....

No need to injure Hoffman

Bunnies Man lives in Coffs - he can "take one for the team" - dress up as a girl and go and offer himself to Hoffman. Once he's ahem exposed himself as Bunnies Man of LU then Hoffman will be forced to retire in shame or something.

Smells a bit like the Carroll TBA all over again doesn't it?

I can definitely see Bird lining up in the #18 jersey.

I don't believe anything Ikin says - he constantly says "Believe you me..." to which I respond "Believe you not!"

I thought any player suspended from the week before Origin is not eligible to play

although it is dodgy, there is nothing illegal about this IMO?

bird serves his 2 game for the titans. NSW player has an injury, bird replaces injured player.

dodgy yes, illegal no

Isn't there a rule against this TBA sh*t now?
Against TBA... Yes there is...

But if a back rower were to get 'injured' after Bird has completed his suspension... They SHOULD be free to play.

Unless they wrote something in to the rules which stops it..

except Jackson plays on the right with Reynolds at Canterbury, not on the left where Hoffman (at Melbourne) or Williams (with a combination with Hodkinson) play. Hoffman 99% of his career has played on the left. Scott 99% of his career has played on the right.

some folks need to realise that the old 'second rower' has become a specialised quasi forward/quasi back position? The 3 back rowers basically play in 3 different zones of the width of the field. That's why for example you won't see Gallen, Watmough & Merrin start for the Blues with a couple of props already on the field - those 3 all play in the middle zone. The number on Watmough's back at Manky is irrelevant.

The old Second rower is becoming very specialised with the sides they play on too. They and the centres don't roam or move to the open side of the field during the game as they did in the old days. Versatile blokes like Bird and Lewis can be effective on one or both edges and the middle, but many of the back rowers have become specialised. It has big implications particularly in defence.

Halves as well run short side plays on their specialised side, or can be the 1st or 2nd receiver of an open side play depending on what side it starts or is going. The positional terms Half back and Five Eighth have little significance these days. Due to the differences in attributes of two halves in a club team at NRL level, one may have greater responsibility such as kicking, but it can be either of the 6 or 7.

There is. Because this happened a few years ago. If a player is suspended from representing his club, he's automatically deprived from representing his state and all other club players are deprived from representing their club the week before.

This just goes to show how much of a goose Ben Ikin is.

THE NRL is poised to block a secret plan for a shock return to State of Origin I for the suspended Blues star Greg Bird.

NSW management and coach Laurie Daley were last night locked in discussions about whether Bird could now be eligible to confront Queensland next Wednesday night.

Bird will serve the second week of a two-game suspension tonight when Gold Coast play New Zealand Warriors at Cbus Stadium.

Under the NRL rules Bird is now free to be selected. Daley isn’t looking at picking Bird in his run-on squad, but as the 18th man.

“We have inquired about whether Greg could come into camp as 18th man,’’ Daley said.

“Having revealed the rules there’s a possibility Greg is eligible. We have asked the NRL to make a ruling as to whether he is or isn’t and the preliminary view is that he isn’t. We were only looking at him as an 18th man and we will now move on but we would like to have got him into camp.”

Bird was suspended for two games for a dangerous throw on South Sydney’s Bryson Goodwin in round eight.

Bird has told friends he is keen to play and is waiting for a call-up. The NRL seems to want to deny Bird the chance to come into the Blues’ 18-man squad. NSW Rugby League officials have been speaking to NRL head of football Todd Greenberg about the issue.

The NRL judiciary code states that all NRL or representative competitions which the player “would have been eligible to participate in ... had he not been suspended” must have been played and concluded.

Let him play.

I understand that the game wants to be fair & just for all but tell me how is it fair and just that the top teams have to surrender their top stars while others don't? How is it fair on the fans to have to pay the exact same price for an inferior product which is akin to ISC/NSW Cup footy?

It's not.

So if the opportunity is there for a player to serve their suspension so they'd be available for Origin, well let them do that and give fans the product they deserve. Lord knows, if you're paying $200 just for a single ticket, you deserve to see the best of the best go at it.

Seems they asked the question and were told no. They wouldn't be doing their best to win a series if they didn't at least enquire about the possibility
