Maguire Might Not Choose Teddy This Year

not at the same share of total metres that edwards does. Teddy gets 22% of his metres from kick returns. Walsh only 20%. Edwards? A whopping 46%.

When a fullback has a 200+m game, it says far more about how their forward pack defended than it does about the fullback.

similarly you’ll often see props with huge metre numbers… and then realise that their side scored a bunch of tries and forced a half dozen line dropouts so they got to rack up cheap metres on returns too.
Yep he is the ultimate stat padder

He can make some metres when he catches a kick on the full with the chase 30m away

I don’t think he is a padder as such. Gallen was a padder as he’d jump in and take runs to the detriment of his side. His tackle 4 settlers when a team was on the back foot were legendary.

edwards just does his job playing behind the best front row on earth along with most of the Australian back row and as such he’s often catching kicks on the full in good position. That’s not his fault. It does throw his stats out though and people seem to do a lot of surface level analysis of such stats

He’s the top tackle breaking and post contact metres making fullback. He is regularly beating tacklers on those return and racking up more metres on kick returns which would account for some of that difference.

Edwards has been better than Teddy for years now, how much longer should he have been picked on reputation? On top of that he's been killing the NSW attack hogging the ball

Tedesco should've been picked until he just simply wasn't good enough to warrant selection anymore. He's still good enough and is still one of the best fullbacks in the comp plus he's got the experience which a newer backline will most certainly need.

Is Edwards going to play THAT much better on Origin night to make up for that massive loss of experience? I don't think so. I guess we'll see.

How do players get origin experience if they can't be selected if they don't have experience?

Put them around experienced players or have them come off the bench. For example if you had Suaalii and Addo-Carr on the left side that'd make much more sense than having two rookies out there with not a game between them.

Off the bench is an option as well, I remember back in the day Cooper Cronk did his time off the bench for QLD, they didn't just punt Lockyer when Cooper came along. Same deal with DCE, he played quite a few games off the bench for QLD to get a feel for things.

If it was my choice I'd have picked one player to debut in the backline this year and that would've been it for this season. For example if they wanted Edwards then the backline should've been Edwards, Addo-Carr, Burton, Crichton and To'o. That backline sounds much more intimidating and hard to stop then what we've actually got.

I do think it's pretty fkn hilarious how we have gone from picking 4 or 5 fullbacks and shoehorning them into the 17, to now picking half a dozen 80 minute backrowers and doing the same.

In terms of picking too many second rowers, NSW has been doing that for over a decade. Go back and have a look at NSW Origin selections for the last 10-15 years, you will find two second rowers and only one specialist front row forward on the interchange bench for each game. Qld, during the same period, pick two specialist front rowers on its interchange bench, yet we wonder why NSW winds up losing so often.

Its been a bug bear of mine for yonks whenever the old "mobile forward pack, run Qld around" chestnut. Its bollocks.

he is leading by a whopping 1 tackle break on teddy, off of 60 more runs.On a per run basis edwards makes 2.4m post contact per carry to teddy’s 2.6m.

he just runs the ball a lot. That’s his primary strength. His creativity - tries, try assists, line breaks, line break assists - are always well down on the other blue chip fullbacks in the comp.

as it stands though Madge is going to be tying to come up with specific game plans on how to shut down Walsh. Slater will not have to put any thought into worrying about doing similar to edwards.

hell this isn’t even to say that edwards’ selection is bad. It’s just Madge has not replaced the X factor/play maker that we got out of Teddy in past series in this backline. If latrell and fox had been named over Sualli and Lomax, edwards contributing with rock solid kick returns and metre eating would have been great since JAC and trell are hardly work horses

They will be paired with a more experienced teammate. Suaalii and To'o play on the left for their club teams, and Crichton and Lomax play on the right.

Even the most ardent Penrith fans will tell you he isn’t as creative as other top fullbacks. But as you implied his main strength is his fitness and work rate. He’s always there ready able to take another run. If teddy had taken another 60 runs would his metres on a per basis still be the same? Very likely not. Worth noting His line break involvement is above other fullbacks this season so he’s involved in a lot of good attacking plays even if he’s not throwing the final pass.

Leaving Tedesco out is pretty stupid. If he was out of form fair enough but he is killing it in a team that is regularly putting on 40+ points. It’s a lot of strike and experience to leave out when there are so many players in key positions out with injury.

Say it again and say it louder so the dumbf**k selectors can hear it.

Every year origin is reffed differently to club games. The ruck is slow and the 10metres is short.

And every year the NSW coaching staff are shocked when they discover that picking mobile back rowers isn’t effective because they don’t control the ruck and don’t have the space they need.

Manly pack flogged the “best front row on earth” like a red-headed step child and Edwards still made 270m, with only 4 kick returns.

NSW makes the same mistake every single year without fail

They diagnose the problem as we didn't work hard enough last year. So boring grinders are picked year after year and maybe they chuck on 1 forward to the bench with a bit of spark as a gamble

We got smashed by Queensland xfactor players last year, not by them out grinding us.

With a few exceptions where we got Trell, Turbo plus peak Teddy and Cook together this has been the way NSW keep choosing teams all the way back to the drought

Last year wasn't a problem with effort

So he should have been dumped last year & then Edwards isn't a rookie this year. Fair point.

He wasn't that bad last year either though, definitely one of his worst years to date but still one of NSW's best options and was still playing above average footy.

I'm talking severe dip in ability. For example, Latrell being dropped despite his experience is completely justified because he's out of shape, isn't playing well at all and has lost many many steps from when he was last dominating games.

He was beyond horrible in Origin though, he’s not got it anymore at that level.
