A somewhat controversial idea?

I know some will not like it. But hear me out (and realise I am not suggesting we do it; I am thnking of the what if factor).

Upon reading yesterday's SMH, I read that the Dogs are apparently attempting to oust Willie Mason from their club.

Now, I can not comment on his cocaine allegations because they were just that - allegations. And he is going to pursue legal action. This (at least to me) indicates that he may be innocent; if he goes to court, where nothing but facts and evidence are accepterd, he is in a way saying he is innocent.

But back to my idea (HEAR ME OUT!). IF Jamie for certain doesn't return to league, maybe we could consider using this money to sign him?

I mean, I don't really like Mason, but he's been playing really well lately and can really be a match winner.

Now, bear in mind I am not 100% behind the idea myself; rather I was interested to see what you guys' reactions would be.

I mean, if Jamie does go, we have a lot of quality backs - Graham, Prince, Langi and some of the other younger blokes. Plus O'Dwyer can play centre and 5/8.

So we next year release some players we won't use (Kat, McKinnon and others who don't figure in our plans) and sign Mason. THIS IS A WHAT IF; it might be very hard to sign him in reality.

Then we put him on the bench and unleash him in the middle of the game.

I think he's been playing very well lately, and he can play very well in the front or back rows.

IF the Bulldogs are trying to oust him (BTW - I don't believe anything I read in the papers these days), don't you think there must be a reason they are trying to oust him....ie they feel he is too much trouble - which means he has done things which they consider bad.

So, why would we want someone who does bad things (we know the various different types of bad things Canterbury players are alleged to have been involved in) and could potentially end up banned or whatever???

And yes, I too think he is overrated - has a handful of good games each year.

Fair enough.

But yes - maybe he had done something bad. But our players are no goodie-two-shoes (Ahem, Cannings, Ahem, the alleged incident where Witt showed up drunk to training).

I also used to think that for a guy his size he was HUGELY over-rated. But the facts don't lie - how many tries does he or has he scored for the Dogs? With a great hooker and halfback (which we now have), he would get good balls and probably score.

If it makes you feel better, if he does get kicked out, we probably won't sign him. And I reckon whoever signds him will be very lucky - if it's true he gest kicked out, I think he'll play the best footy of his career to prove Canterbury wrong.

C'mon now let's be realistic. If a high profile player such as Mason leaves the Dogs there is only one place he will end up........The Roosters!

If Chris Anderson was still at the Sharks he would be a big chance of going there but I'd say he'll be a Rooster if he leaves Canterbury.

The day Mason dons an Eels jersey will be the day that I burn mine in the Leagues Club foyer. I don't want that worthless sack of shit anywhere near my club

Its a difficult one. Mason if his head is on straight can be a good player however is he worth the risk as there are a lot of questions about him off and on the field.

The other side of that is if Jamie does retire IMO the money would be better off being spent ensuring the likes of Mateo, Smith, Hinchcliffe, Afamasaga and the other good youngsters we have stay at the club.

Fair enough.

That's why I brought it up - to see people's opinions.

I think I agree with Colonel Eel 100%. Mason CAN be a match winner, but needs consistency.

And developing our juniors could be a great idea too.

No Thanks, i also don't want him at Parra, just asking for trouble and he's not even that great a player in my opinion

I think Mason would be a good signing. He would definately be adding to our pack and if you don't think he would be a handy addition to the team then you are dreaming.

It is time for Parra to make a Major signing. If not Mason then maybe a 5/8 or a hooker so Morris can move into the halves fulltime.

The idea isn't as silly as it sounds.

I regard Willie as more than a handy footballer off the field he's a deadset lair. he will only improve our forward pack.

However I don't think our problem is in the forwards it's the lack of quality outside backs, with 250k allready in the kit for next year we need to make a serious bid on a quality centre, five-eight and maybe a couple of so called bargain buys on the wing.

PS
I can name a couple of posters here that didn't want Amos Roberts at the club, I wander if they have changed their tune??

I wouldn't want Mason at Parramatta, his reputation is getting worse and worse. I highly doubt Mason would even contemplate joining our club either, He's been quite vocal at his hatred towards the Eels.

By trouble I am not referring to arguements with bouncers or turning up pissed......the Canterbury club has some HUGE issues hanging over their head....I am not for one minute suggesting Mason is involved cos I have no idea......BUT if they are looking to oust him (and I haven't heard any talk of others being ousted) you have to imagine he has done some stuff that is substantially worse than arguing with bouncers or getting pissed once.....he has either done something very bad OR repeatedly does lots of stuff bad (ie he is a liability).

Mason is too soft. He has the occassional good game (eg Friday night), but he goes missing alot also. Too inconsistent.

Agreed. We have enough forwards and should retain any young talent we have.
