St George-Illawarra has its sights set on poaching another Raiders youngster, with the Dragons emerging as Canberra's biggest rival in its quest to retain Joel Thompson.
Thompson has been heavily linked to Parramatta after it missed out on fellow Raiders back-rower Josh Papalii, but Fairfax Media understands the Dragons are firming as the Raiders likely challenger.
His Canberra deal expires at the end of the season, and the Raiders are desperate to retain the 24-year-old.

With veteran three-quarter Matt Cooper likely to retire after this year, the Dragons are attracted by Thompson's versatility.

Thompson has found a permanent home in Canberra's back row this year, but has played a significant portion of his 72 NRL games at centre.
Helping the Dragons' cause is the wealth of former Raiders already on their books, including Bronx Goodwin, Bronson Harrison, Michael Weyman and Daniel Vidot. It is also understood the struggling Warriors, are poised to make a play at Thompson.
Head coach Matt Elliott and assistant Andrew McFadden are former Raiders staffers, and are big fans of the Forbes junior.
The Raiders have held some discussions with Thompson's management, and the club is also busy trying to lock up a number of other off-contract players.
Halfback Sam Williams, centre Jarrod Croker and prop Brett White head the list of players whose deals expire at the end of the year.
Canberra is in a strong bargaining position after it ripped up Josh Dugan's rich contract, but the saga has prolonged discussions with other players.

Note, this is not from the Telegraph so might be slightly more believable, although nto sure if its wise. I get that we are having a recruitment drive, but I dont think the back row is our weak point, and I dont think putting a back rower in the centres will be the answer either!!!

We should be going after Sam WILLIAMS and Jarod CROKER not THOMPSON.

I'd take him, we do need a centre.

He was the bloke that chased hayne down in the all stars match and almost got him wasn't he?

So this is how we are planning to win the comp this year. We sign up every player in the league so we don't have any competition. We win by default without having to play a game.

Bang, I am aware that we are going after Sam Wiliams and have been for a few weeks now. Getting his signature may be a different story though. My info is we are a good chance of snaring him.

I believe the Dogs will have something to say about that...

Especially if they release Hodkinson....

Des is a big fan.

F#*king media using us to fill the pages and making fun of us.Sure we may be interested in certain players ,but now it is "desperate Dragons",f#*king pr*cks, they have turned to us as fools.
I suppose we have asked for it,shame on the club to let this happen.

Joel Thompson, hardly an inspiring signing.. will a backrower come wannabe centre help us reach the finals...dont think so.
but fits in perfectly with the current quality of recruitment..
lets keep buying these "versatile" type of players ie... play many positions but not really good at any.

Gotta buy you a beer soon mate other wise you'll blow a fuse!

You are really pissed off at the moment aren't you? You have explained your reasons well and I agree to a large extent.

I undertand your frustration but for me getting angry is like a rocking chair, gives you something to but gets you nowhere.

It will come good again, boom bust cycle mate.

Is this how the Dragons plan to break the Canberra hoodoo, by signing all their players?
