Being a Redcliffe man I am interested in hearing how he is getting along in the NRL.

Any reports from Panthers fans on how he is going.

He is injured at the moment.

But from all reports, he has had a great start to the season, and was playing halfback against the knights in the premier league 3 weeks ago.

I hope he'll recover quickly. We might need him come State Of Origin time - unless the hierarchy at both NSW & QLD give the panther players the big snub just like last year.

Panthers players will have to be selected in rep sides this year.
As for Aaron Barba i have heard so much about him which is all positive except for maybe some suspect defence, we will need him around Origin time and if there is any injuries (hope not).

I saw the whole game in premier league against the knights. Barba went very well. He is sort of in the Preston Campbell mould. A bit of a live wire. He seems to have all the skills. I think he is cut out for the halves rather than the outside backs.

Unfortunately for Aaron, I think he will be relying on injuries to name players to get a start in first grade this year. I have no doubt, that if he gets a bit of game time in the top grade, his own game will improve to the n'th degree. The kid has some talent, that's for sure.

Since the modifications in the interchange rules, little fast guys like Aaron seem to have more impact than they were having a few years ago, running at big tired forwards. You just have to look at the success of blokes like Wing, Slater, Bowen and Co. They are carving up under the new rules.

I think once Barba cracks it into first grade, he will either play half or wing.

I would play as much of him in first division before promoting him. It's a big leap from the QRL to the NRL. First division is a great stepping stone for the transition.

I saw him at training last night, and he looked fit to play to me.

But then again, I guess they can be fit to train, but not necessarily fit to play.

I guess we'll find out for sure on Saturday night.

But I have watched him play in a trial match, against the Knights, and then again
down in Canberra, and I have to say he is going to be a top player.

Exactly like his cousin Preston. I think he bleached his hair so we would be able to
tell the difference between them. The similarities in the way they play, and their
looks is uncanny.

This way we know.....white hair......Aaron.......head gear........Preston.

Bollocks...the Qld Cup is easily the equal of Premier League

Yeah........but in the same way dogs grow to look like their owners,
people who have idols or heroes tend to grow up to have similar looks,
mannerisms and style to those that they want to emulate.

That's why you see so many younger players that you can immediately
identify as being very similar in style to other older players.

It's a great compliment to Preston that Aaron wants to be so much like him,
and he has enough natural talent of his own to carry it off too.

I don't mind if we have a "back up Preston" on hand.

I just realised that both the Broncos and Storm use QRL teams as their "feeder" clubs... so yeah, I was wrong with my assessment! #-o

i think a qld cup side is a panthers feeder team too

i think it may be Wests Panthers

because when Paul Aiton (he used to play up here in caboolture) was signed by penrith, he played for wests then went down

Penrith now have an affiliation with Eastern Suburbs Tigers in the Queensland Cup (the John Lang connection). Wests Panthers are not playing in the Queensland Cup this season.

All Queensland Cup teams have NRL affiliations :

Easts - Penrith
Souths/Logan - Canberra
Brothers/Valleys - St George/Illawarra
Wynnum Seagulls - Manly
Redcliffe - Sydney Roosters
Norths - Melbourne (straight feeder club situation)
Ipswich - South Sydney
Toowoomba - Brisbane Broncos (straight feeder club situation)
Burleigh - Bulldogs
Tweed Heads - Parramatta
Central Qld - North Queensland Cowboys
North Qld Young Guns - North Queensland Cowboys (straight feeder club situation)

Interestingly, none of the three NRL "reserve grade" teams - Norths, Toowoomba or Young Guns made the semi-finals in 2003. Shows how strong the competition really is.

Fox Sports is showing a replay of the Saturday ABC coverage of a Queensland Cup game each week from now on starting Wednesday at 4.30pm.

Unfortunately, this week it is Souths/Logan v Brothers/Valleys which is essentially the bottom of the table clash. All clubs get a turn on the TV game early in the season. Keep an eye out for some top games coming up.
