ABC TV has announced the appointment of Iain Knight as the broadcaster's new head of sport, effective immediately.

Sandra Levy, director of ABC TV, said Knight was a senior producer of ABC TV's coverage of the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games and was an experienced documentary maker who wrote, produced and directed The Rise and Rise of Australian Rugby in 2003.

"He has an extensive background in sport broadcasting, and his experience will be invaluable in continuing and developing ABC TV's commitment to Australian sport on television," she said in a statement.

Knight has also been involved with ABC TV's coverage of the Hockey World Cup, Champion of Champions tournaments, and the Hopman Cup tennis.

He began his working life as a trainee at ABC TV and in 1993 graduated from the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS).

He returned to ABC TV from the freelance world in 1998.

Sounds like a Yawnyawn fan is the new head of ABC sport. Pretty dissapointing, now we will never get that club rugby union garbage off our screens and replace it with Premier League.

The ABC is run by a pack of chardonnay socialists...Did you honestly expect them to hire a league Fanboy/girl?

I'm sure she'll remain even handed in her judgement...I hope you QLDer's need a fix of Club Union...

At least it will rile the AFLers

Not really.

We get our VFL/SANFL/WAFL (depending where you live) live each Saturday arvo. Couldn't think of anything more boring that club rugby union.

I know him - he's a Bunnies fan, god help him.

If there was ever a chance of getting league back on to the ABC, NOW is the time.

Iain is actually a league man, despite having made that documentary.

All it needs is for the public to give him an indication of their desire to see more league and he'll have a case to put to the board to get say Premier League on air instaed of that club rugby rubbish.

Start ringing and sending your e-mails NOW.

The Dawson Twins Minus 1 thanks for the insight. I was just asuming he was a union guy from his doco.

Instead of complaining about it, why don't you people get off your seats and go and watch the premier league games at the ground. I'm sure the players would rather have people at the ground then just TV cameras.

I have two selfish reasons to want to see PL on the ABC:

1. If I'm really lucky, somebody back home might tape a few games (hopefully a couple involving the Jets) and send them to me here in Shanghai.

2. Television coverage would make an enormous difference to the value of jersey and ground signage sponsorship for "orphan" clubs like Newtown.

He is definitely a league man which is great news far removed from the days of that AFL sympathiser and annoying ex-cricket commentator Neville Oliver.

There is no reason as to why you can't have both Union and League on the ABC.

As far as i'm concerned, piss-off that Netball and Lawn Bowls crap off there and put premier league on.
