There is more to songwriting than writing bloated monstrosities with a 17/4 time signature.

There is a great skill in writing music that actually sounds good.

I'll also say Miles Davis and John Coltrane on the instrumental side.

i dont get your point carc

is the shuddupayaface guy a 'musical genius'?

and minihindy lets face it dylan was a product of style and politics far more than any musical ability - he was in the right place at the right time - like the other gawd awful warbler from the sex pistols

he is the very definition of how you dont have to have much musical ability to sell some records

he sure as hell is not a musical genius

Rubbish, great song writing is anything you percieve it to be, personally i think Iva Davies is brillant, he was a keen student of music and has had considerable success as write/song writer and now a director of music, however others would disagree.

Axl Rose believe it or not has written some of the best pieces of music i've and probably ever hear, why? because it's from the heart and genuine, however would say 'nah he wears hair spray, a whining blah blah'.

Do you respect the works of Eddie Van Halen Mini? have you even realy heard his music or just 'Jump' and 'Panama'.

A musically genuis can be anyone that masters their field in a particular instrument, had considerable success promoting it as well as influential, they're the key ingredients imo, however a person can master a variety of different instruments obviously is musically brillant.

Bob Dylan is in an elite group of musicians: those which sing worse than I do.

Justice certainly has a weird production, I agree. I hated it for about ten years, then one day I was sitting at home by myself and I decided to listen to it, and cranked it up really loud on my recently purchased set of Infinity Studio monitors ($1200 hi-fi speakers). It sounded awesome, the closest thing I'd heard on a recording to actually being in the studio with the band. The thing is though unless you're listening to it on top-shelf equipment cranked up LOUD, it sounds flat and horrible. The Black Album on the other hand has a production that obviously been geared to sound good on regular headphones and speakers, so to most listeners it sounds better. I don't like the songs as much though, with the exception of 3 or 4 tracks it bores me.

Justice has always been my favourite, the double LP was the first album i ever brought.. I sometimes think that Cliff gets talked up a little more because he died, yes he was good at what he did but i am not sure his influence over the band doesn't get talked up a bit given the Hetfield Ulrich headstrong battles that apparently went on.

As for the title of the thread.. Thom Yorke always amazes me, everything he does has quality written all over it.

Does not liking someones music make them wankers?

Because he is 'pretentious'* I assume.

*Doesn't play crappy three chord punk songs.

And yes, I'd agree, another one of the modern musical geniuses.

Yes.
And yes, my favourite music is generally of the punk rock variety (altho its a myth that its all sh*tty musicians, listen to the bass lines in frenzal or rancid, the general good musicianship from el hefe in particular in nofx, some of the quality ska-punk out there, dropkick murphys mix of traditional irish music and punk rock, the guitar work from strung out etc etc). And i can see musical talent across a variety of genres, and appreciate alot of music even if im not the biggest fan (eg stuff like josh pyke, the shins, cut off your hands, clare bowditch, sarah blasko etc etc).

Radiohead is a different level. It just bores me to tears. Its incredibly pretentious, boring f**king music. I'd rather piss in my garden than listen to that stuff. Along with this, there is the holier than thou attitude that is taken by radiohead fans. Many think they are better than you because of there love of radiohead, and despite the fact that they will happily rubbish anyone elses music taste, people who dont like radiohead just dont 'get it.' Not possible that they completely get it, they just dont like it at all and think its only use is as a cure for insomnia.

And that makes Yorke a wanker how exactly? You don't like Radiohead fans who rubbish anyone elses music taste yet you put that in a rant about how much you hate Radiohead and the people that like them.

He's bordering on being a pretentious wanker with this reducing his carbon footprint rubbish but he redeemed himself by giving out In Rainbows for free.

That will cover Millers dislike of him as well i guess.. Is having a differing view on the climate change issue enough to conclude someone is a wanker?

Either way he certainly ranks high on the list of what this thread is about in my opinion.
