G'day, even though i don't contribute to the forum as much as i probably should, it is my source of information relating to all things Raiders and a great time passer when im at work.. and now i need some help/info.

Without sounding like a personals ad, im 23, Male and have been a Sydney Boy all my life. Luckily enough i have been offered a job with the plebs in the Public Service in Canberra and jumped at the opportunity for obvious reasons. I actually start work on Monday week and will move down on that weekend, this is where i need your help..

I'll be working at Macquarie and managed to do a shifty and line up student accomodation on Marcus Clarke St, in the city, not bad considering it's cheap as chips and i'm not a student.

Now what is their to do in Canberra, i used to come for the home games and then head back home and must admit i never enjoyed the local sights.

I like a drink as well as a punt, are their any clubs/pubs in the vicinty that you would recommend, preferably with a TAB.
As for the nightlife, im guessing Civic?
Where's a good place to watch the English Premier League?
Any good fast food joints around? Nothing better than a kebab to cure a hangover
And, whats the fastest way to get to Fyshwick? haha

Any info will do... cheers

Civic is good for night life and everything mate. Dickson seems pretty good for Fast Food, as well as Belconnen/Tuggeranong etc.

EPL...hmmm ask one of the Army dudes about that. ;-)

There's a club right near Marcus Clarke st called the Canberra City Club I think, its on the ANU side near the multi storey car park, they have all the usual ammenities. To watch the premier league you'll want to go to the City Club in Garema Place in Civic. There's a stackload of fast food joints in Civic, I wouldnt reccoment Chicken Gourmet, numerous times that place has persuaded my stomach to empty its load on an unsuspecting footpath. Lastly, make sure you join the Raiders Army, we'll be up for showing you a good night in town. Have a good one... As for Fyshwick, steer clear.....

Panjabi ... you should be ashamed of yourself taking up accomodation space intend for needy students who dont earn much of a crust.

I know of that establishment and shall report you .... I will tell them to look out for a 23yo single male public servant with Indian origins ... shame on you panjabi.

PS there aint nothing wrong with Fyshwick.

I been a uni student for 5 years and lived on a staple diet of fried rice and tuna.. and it's time i get some back.

I'm not sure who's more excited about me moving to Canberra, Me or all my porn obsessed, fireworks deprived mates.

The place that used to sell us illegal fireworks for 'pest extermination' , has just been converted into porn shop, spewing. Bring back Redback!

haha really? how long ago did they go. They werent that good, got very strict, took a copy of licences and everything.

The Crackerman (about a 100 meters up the road) was the shop to go to. I remember one time the old granny took me out back and gave me free faulty bungers she had lying around in a huge bin. Then she quietly got us out the backdoor.

I felt so backdoor bandit that day.

Good on you Panjabi

I have been meaning to PM you for weeks, looks like a Beer is on the cards instead :D Bay25 tells me you are a decent bloke so we should get along quite well.

If you are on Marcus Clarke street then you are in the thick of it as far as Canberra goes. Here is the low down, down low.

Mooseheads (or the Caboose is you are in to Aussie rhyming slang ;-) ) is all the go at the moment. Clubs in Canberra seem to go through spells where they are red hot while the others plod along. The caboose is the ticket at the moment. It is nothing crash hot but it is a meat market and there are tarts to be had there. If you go there Friday afternoon you will get pints of VB for $3.50. You will usually see a drunk Woodgers figuring out how to get the car home.

If you want to see the Raiders on a Friday or Saturday Night have a go at the North Bar on Northbourne Ave next to ICBM and Insomnia. As you walk in they reside on the left of the bar. Some are friendly, others are complete dicks, it really depends how many groupies are there and if they want to appear important in front of them as to whether you get a decent conversation or not. If you catch a decent player who you get chatting to then you will probably get a few freebies for recognising them. The reggies especially are keen to shout people who know who they are.

Stay away from Inblue. It was Pandora's in its day and is a real whorefest but I can't stand going to that dirty hole. The toilets are almost knee deep in water and on the tiles you can hear the broken glass inbedding in the sole of your shoe.

South Pac's is an Islanders club so even though drinks are cheap, look straight ahead and don't go near the dancefloor as the girls are more agressive than the guys.

ICBM is chart music and classics as well as 80's stuff. Crowded but decent if you want to pull. The girls aren't the worst.

Insomnia is good. It is a dance club and most people inside have the predictable Mt Franklin but they do often get some tidy DJ's on a Saturday night, most from Sydney that you will know if you like that music

King O'Malleys is in Garema Court. It is an Irish Pub and they often have a live band. It is decent and popular but fairly pricey for a pub. Good food during the day.

Acadamy. Been there once. They will tell you it is the best club in the southern hemisphere. It is well decked out but it isn't as good as people make out. They charge you a tenner for your trouble as well.

Uni Bar: At the University of Canberra. Never been there on a Thursday night but I hear it is bloody tops and the tarts are everywhere.

Shooters: f**ked. Stay away.

If you want some grub then #1 is right, Dickson is the ticket. You can get anything up there and there is an Irish pub called O'Neals that is owned by the former Raiders CEO Kevin O'Neal. His daughter behind the bar is pleasing on the eye as well ;-) (*note - If she is a gobbledok then I had drunk a lot of pints*) Also you are in the city so you can get any food you want anyway.

You can usually get the EPL at the City Club in Garema Court or PJ O'Reillys(an irish pub) in town. If you go anywhere that has a screen ask them for Fox and they usually will do it.

If you ever need a new tooth, you'll be sure to find one on the floor at Shooters.

Woodgers, the UC bar is indeed tops.

Woodgers, If you are talking about Jess Neil then you had drunk a LOT of pints. She is a nice girl, but if you think she is hot you are kidding yourself.
