AFL 2005 - Round 6

For another week, work is just going off the scale, so I'll have to forego a game by game rundown.

I've put my tips in on the tipping thread, and 3 matches have got me worried.

Tonight's game is a 50-50 bet and, Fevola or no Fevola, it wouldn't shock me in the slightest to see the Blues roll us.

The Adelaide vs Kangaroos game is another doozie, with the sides locked at 4-all from their previous 8 encounters. I've gone for a rebounding Adelaide at home, but the Roos are more than capable of getting up.

Richmond hasn't beaten Port since 1998, and has lost its previous 7 clashes with the Power. They'd rightly fancy their chances on Sunday, however, and while I had to give the Power one last chance, the Tigers may firmly upend the previous balance of (no pun intended) power should they find a way to get the points.

As embittering as it was from my perspective, it was a handy win for the Blues nonetheless. As has been the norm for all of our past five games (Brisbane excepted) we've managed to look the better side for much of the match before lacking the clout and composure to put the game away late in the piece. Carlton really steadied well in the final quarter, with experienced players like Whitnall & Lappin (both of whom had been dismal during the first three terms) found a way to step up when needed. Jarrad Waite was strong up forward all night and young Eddie Betts did a few beautiful things late also, and kicked three superb goals for such a raw player. Looks very much a likely type.

If we're going to play this type of game to ensure competitiveness, then the downside will be these sort of losses. On the upside, Hodge continues to excel along with Bateman, and both Thurgood and young Harry Miller were great this time around.

Oh for a strong forward presence, ala Brown or Tredrea, which would see us sitting 5-1 today instead of 1-5. Brown was absolutely off the planet last night (which was good for my dream team) gathering twenty possessions, 14 marks and kicking 8 goals 2 behinds from his first game back from suspension. Given that he appeared to be rested during the final term, this was a truly superb return.

I also had a gander at the second half of the Melbourne vs Freo game yesterday. Its difficult to believe that I was watching the same Freo side that had been insipid beyond belief a fortnight ago. It was an extremely exciting and high standard match and (from a neutral perspective) a pleasure to watch after the full-on clanger fest of Friday night.

Well done to both sides.

No doubt we'll hear a lot more about this from Meltiger and Camsmith, but I thought I'd get in first while they make their way back from the game.

Fantastic win by the Tigers and probably their best for a number of years. I can but look at big Richo and sigh, as he reinforces my above point about the value of gun talls up forward. Anyone who doubts Hawthorn's draft direction last year, needs to keep the names Brown, Reiwoldt, Tredrea, Richardson & Neitz in mind.

The Tigers will nail Carlton next week and will be well positioned for a run at a position in the lower rungs of the eight. It'll get tougher as the season progresses, and the side still has to front-up outside of Melbourne yet, but a great foundation has been laid for the year ahead. Shane Tuck was fabulous again, and I should hope that Hawthorn has a man out this week tieing up a deal with Travis Tuck for the 2006 season.

Richardson & Brown, going on stats, must have been awesome today and have been the key difference for the Tigers in all of their wins to date. I've got to hand it to the Tigers, they're doing well.

I watched quite a bit of the Cats vs Bulldogs clash, and was suitably impressed by the purrers. They'll retain a spot in the four for sure and it should be a top game between them and the Saints at the Dome next weekend.

The Hounds didn't look too bad, but -- as per Hawthorn -- were crying out for a strong forward presence. Both clubs have been burnt badly on the Rawlings trade, although I'm just glad we're not paying as much for Jacobs as they are for Jade. The Hounds have some talent, but I was surprised by how slender many of the Bulldog bodies were.

Awful news on the season ending injury to Darcy, as its always bad to see players go down in this way, particularly players of his ability. I think the Bulldogs have really found a player in young ruckman, Will Minson, but the loss of Darcy will reverberate through their season.

Terrible news not just for the Dogs but for anyone who loves watching quality footballers as well.

Darc is one of the good ones.

It was a fantastic win, with Port getting out to a nice early lead with its season on the line, the Tigers showed plenty.

Its funny how the side with the reputation always gets its form apologised for.

When Port thumped Richmond last year, were Port fans mitigating the win on account of Richmond not playing the very best it could on the day?!

Oh, and bad luck with the hawks, just can't seem to win the close ones. And also Darcy one of my favorite non-tiger players who was having a pretty good season so far is a real bad loss. I'll miss not seeing him run around throughout the season. :(

Most important win since we nailed Footscray by 3 points in 2001 in the 'payback' game. Post 2001, the only better wins they have had were round 1 in 2002 and 2004 when we hammerd the Skunks.

I can but look at big Richo and sigh, as he reinforces my above point about the value of gun talls up forward. Anyone who doubts Hawthorn's draft direction last year, needs to keep the names Brown, Reiwoldt, Tredrea, Richardson & Neitz in mind.

Wasn't Brown awesome? 8 goals to 3/4 time... He's better than Lloyd, that was a Dunstall/Plugger/Carey type performance. Most importantly for Brisbane is the Carey comparison, definately will be up there as one of the all time great CHF's by the end of his career. (So long as hes finished trying to emulate Dermie). You are probably right on Hawthorn, their long term need was most likely the talls rather than Tambo.

Tredea was shithouse yesterday. Our backline flogged his arse.

The Tigers will nail Carlton next week

Yes, yes we will. & who do we have the week after that? Eddie's mob :D :D :D

and will be well positioned for a run at a position in the lower rungs of the eight.

Still acting childish my friend.... I told you we are better than the rubbish they have put on over the last three years.

and the side still has to front-up outside of Melbourne yet

Only three times and you'd have to argue that we have one of the easier travelling schedules. Brisbane in a few weeks will be immensely tough. although excepting the Prelim, we actually go alright in Brisbane (Even last year). I'd almost certainly mark Fremantle down as a loss though as it comes a week after the return bout against Carlton and two weeks after Port @ Moron Park.

but a great foundation has been laid for the year ahead. Shane Tuck was fabulous again, and I should hope that Hawthorn has a man out this week tieing up a deal with Travis Tuck for the 2006 season.

In all due fairness to Hawthorn Kev, I wouldn't have kept him on the list either. Maybe it was just one of those situations where the player needed a change of club to get himself going?

Richardson & Brown, going on stats, must have been awesome today and have been the key difference for the Tigers in all of their wins to date. I've got to hand it to the Tigers, they're doing well.

Richo and Brown were great but there were others as well. Don't underestimate how much of a difference Tambling made to the structure of that forward line when he came on. Added a much needed touch of imense class to to the forward line. Meyer impressed me as well and Deledio just gets better and better, our future looks awesome.

Richo got dragged at the end of the game .... After limping around the park for a while. Let's hope it was just a case of due reward for his tremendous hard work during the game and not something more serious because as the banner said ... "Richo, you will never know how much Richmond loves you" - He is an out and out superstar and one of the all time greatest Richmond forwards.

"And heres to you Matthew Richardson, Richmond loves you more than you will, WO WO WO"

Nice link to The Graduate's Mrs Robinson on the banner.

I think richo was rested just beacause he was absolutley exhausted. I would of loved to know how far he ran in that game. I think Lloyd needs to take a look at how Richo plays the game, he chases oponents goes in hard for the ball on the ground and never gives up. Lloyd leads goes for the mark, if it hits the ground just looks at the umpire for a free kick then just stands still. Piss weak effort Lloyd.

I still think Tiger supporters are getting too carried away. I can't see one game that i can mark down as a guaranteed win. So we still need to play above our best everyweek. Pople seem to forget our games against Geelong and St.Kilda. But i guess we can all enjoy it while it lasts.

4 wins now... matches how many games we won the WHOOOOLE last season. merkin complain about that ;-)

Tiges have Carlton, Collingwood, Brisbane (at bris) and Melbourne right?

So we need to atleast win half of those.... so if we can beat Carlton and Collingwood we will be looking very good. But i still think those two games wont be a walk over. Lets hope im wrong and we SMASH em.

Collingwood  are as shithouse at the moment as their fans are bogans.

We have West Coast @ TD after those four.... We usually fare well against them over here.

Then North and after that Sydney or Adelaide, (not sure which is first) in consecutive weeks in Melbourne. In contrast to the Weagles, we usually fare terribly against Adelaide even in Mebourne. Both of North and Sydney I strongly think we can win.

If we won those four (Blues, Skunks, North & Sydney), it would give us 8 wins, with return bouts against Hawthorn, Dogs & Carlton to come, if we could win those 3 we'd be on 11 wins and on the cusp of a finals campaign.

I must say that's the absoloute best I feel we can do though. One slip and it gets very very hard.

If we can win those 7 matches though, it leaves us needing to win in reality one more game ..... Adelaide @ Telstra Dome.

A finals campaign is now a realistic goal. Which in a rebuilding year would be bloody sensational for pride around the club.
